I want to apply to Brown and I’m just wondering, does community service play a big part in my application? I have about 400 hours so far :3

Yes, absolutely: at Brown and also at other hard-to-get-into schools. My son received 3 personalized letters from different colleges where they each mentioned specific elements that most impressed the admissions committee. All 3 mentioned his community service work; none mentioned his perfect academic stats (36 ACT, dual 800 SAT IIs, 1 in 400 class rank).

However, no adcom cares how many hours you logged: you need to show leadership and self-driven initiative to make that positive impression. Focus your efforts on whatever organizations will allow you to make decisions, not just log hours – or start your own unofficial non-profit by providing a needed service, however minor, in your neighborhood.

@LoremIpsum Thanks for the advice I volunteered for the congressman and I’m volunteering at the UCSD hospital in the hemodialysis department and hopefully I get to be a volunteer musician there too.
