So, I'm filling out my UC applications, and I'm on section on community service hours.

I have a question regarding one of my services.

I attended a martial arts class from 6-11th grade, and during 9th through the first semester of 11th grade, I came to the beginning class to help lead and instruct the beginners, but it wasn't something I did persistently. I maybe came in for a class once a week, or once every other week, to help out when I finished my homework early, for an hour and a half each time. We only had classes twice a week, so I came in about two or three times a month to help out when I was free, and I did this for about 2 and a half years.

The class was part of my city's recreational district (Hayward Area Recreational District), and I obviously didn't get paid for it. So I'm not exactly sure how much I did over the years, but I did an average 6 hours a month or so. At the time, I didn't do it thinking it was for community service, because I enjoyed it, but since it was unpaid work, instructing little kids mostly, should I include it in my application?

if your school gave you community service hours for it and the hours are added on your transcript, then you should put it in the cs section of the application. Otherwise, you should leave it out and talk about it in your personal statement if you want to.

Many schools don't put CS on transcripts. Consequently, whether or not your school lists CS on your transcript, you can list your CS activities on your app, not just refer to them in your essay.

where do you list it? in the activities section? but don't most of the people have more important activities, such as those they hold leadership in, which they can't really in community service?

I would want to list it in community service, since I've already listed my studies it martial arts as an extra curricular activity. Since I volunteered to teach the class once a week, I would like to list it under community service also.

Personally I think it's a little weak as community service - mainly because you weren't committed to certain class times - just when you felt like it and had some extra time to spare. Not really a committment to serve?
But I also don't think it could hurt you - esp if you need things in the Comm Service category - volunteered as class assistant for children's martial arts classes....
