Recently I was at the University of Chicago campus. I was amazed by the number of cars parked in the lots and for blocks and blocks nearby the school. I assume most graduate students live off campus. But do a large percentage of undergrads live off campus as well? I thought the shuttle service seemed convenient.
Commuter student refers to undergrads who cummute from their family home, not to independent students who live off campus nearby. UChicago is not a commuter school!
Sorry. I thought term referred to students that live off campus, not students that live with their parents.
About a little less than 50% undergraduates live off the campus but very close to it. Most a few blocks. Those cars may not belong to the students living off the campus.
Yes, several buses run around the campus and its neighborhood and are free to students in those areas.
Those cars are pretty unlikely to belong to students. Remember, as with most research universities, there are lots of people working on and around the University of Chicago campus who are neither students nor faculty. The hospital is a major employer, and there are hordes of physics, life sciences, and social sciences researchers tucked away here and there, plus all of the museums, stores, theaters, restaurants . . .
One of the really nice things about Chicago is that Hyde Park has great, reasonably affordable student housing that is very convenient to campus. My kids, one after the other, spent four years sharing the same two-bedroom apartment with others, and I loved that apartment. It was way nicer than anything I lived in during college or grad school, and it cost less than a truly crappy double in the dorms.
Okay, thanks. I only visit the campus during the day. I was just wondering if it turns into a ghost town after 5 pm.
lol, there are at least 5-8,000 students live in the dorm on campus, perhaps they all turned into ghosts after 5.
Those aren’t student cars. Practically no student keeps a car on or near campus because it’s a pain to park and deal with and the CTA/Metra/UChicago shuttles are great.
There are a lot of 3rd and 4th years living off campus because UChicago makes room and board and the meal-plan outrageously expensive and living in Hyde Park is so cheap. But that doesn’t turn it into a commuter school, students are still actively involved in campus and house life and live, at most, a 5 minute shuttle ride away from the Reg.
