I received a Lewis Rudin Scholarship for $25,000 as well as work study/loans in my financial aid package (totalled to about $40,000...my EFC is 1,000). This was based on my dorming at NYU.

As it now stands, the federal aid and scholarship money i was awarded covers tuition and fees for me. If I commute, (i live in queens), will my package be re-evaluated? That is, the minimum Lewis Rudin Scholarship is 15,000 , i believe. Will it be reduced if i commute?

Also, how is commuting to NYU?? Is it harder to make friends/feel included? Mayb thats a dumb question but i had to ask....:)

aLsO.....i got into the CUNY Honors College at Hunter - which is FULL TUITION, plus $1000 pocket money, plus laptop computer, plus $7500 for unpaid internships/study abroad. Also more one on one advisement. Should i take this over NYU?? $$$ is a def concern, hence my first question. I don't wanna take out loans. Pass up NYU for this?????????

I kno NYU is big.....does being a member of the Honors program and a Lewis Rudin scholar give ANY considerable advantage in terms of more one-on-one advisement, internship oppurtunities, or well.......... anything???

you're getting a great finaincial aid package from nyu, the money you make being an nyu graduate, will trump the money you save from going to hunter. a few 10k's in loans is nothing.

on your commuting question im not sure though.

Over 90% of NYU freshmen live in dorms and the vast majority of upper classmen do as well...so don't commute, especially your first year. Its just much easier to make friends in the residence halls, and you're more a part of the school that way.

You've got an amazing finaid package from NYU, why would you even consider CUNY? CUNY is a horrible school, the honors program might be okay (still not anywhere near NYU) though the average student body there leaves a lot to be said for the sorry state of that school system.

Also, don't be concerned about advising at NYU because its fantastic. All NYU students get departmental advisors once they declare a major and have freshmen year advisors as well. This is also not only for those with merit scholarships...pretty much everyone at NYU is on a level playing field, there isn't much special treatment for certain portions of the student body like you'd find at CUNY. That being said, there is no internship program for honors students at NYU, but they shouldn't be hard to land at all, and certainly much easier than from a place like Hunter.

There's no comparison between NYU and CUNY. Seriously, none. With the great package you got from NYU, I can't believe you'd even consider passing it up to go to CUNY. Commuting sucks from everything I've heard from people who have to do it. If you're planning on commuting, plan to at least live in housing freshman year because you'll be at a serious disadvantage if you don't. As for your f/a being re-evaluated if you commute, I don't know for sure but I would imagine it would be, because they're not going to allow you what it would cost in housing if you live at home. No one is going to be allowed to make a profit on f/a or scholarships. You should be talking to the f/a office about that, and not relying on replies on a forum.

yeah bellagrl1 i was also wondering if they would decrease the amount of financial aid if i decided not to dorm. I assumed they would take away the amount in loans first though...
I also got the Lewis Rudin Scholar thing (but i only got $20000 :() Are you going to the reception for Lewis Rudin Scholars?

Probably although I actually didn't RSVP yet. i hope it's not a busy hw day that tuesday (i cannot believe i still have so much hw as a second term senior). i think it'll be a pretty small reception rite?
[probably] see you there!
