Question about NYU Scholarship

I received a letter today informing me that I am a Lewis Rudin Scholar and that I will receive a $20K per year scholarship. This was a pleasant surprise for me. Does anyone know any more about this scholarship? Did anyone else receive it?

excellent job hepstar lol, it looks like youll be going to nyu instead of st.johns now, anyways Lewis Rudin was an advocate here in NYC and he aimed at making the city a better place, he graduated from NYU. So its supposedly for people who want to make the world a better place. Thats all I know. Congratulations

Lewis Rudin City Scholars
Rudin Scholars are outstanding entering freshmen selected from public and parochial high schools in all five boroughs of New York City. In addition to their scholarship, the scholars participate in academic and cultural activities in New York City. The program is named in honor of the late real estate developer Lewis Rudin, former president of the Association for a Better New York and NYU alumnus and trustee.

^Thanks. I was set on attending St. John's, but this new offer could change things.

anyone else?

Congrats Hepstar!! I have no idea what on earth this scholarship is, but 20K per year at NYU sounds amazing! I'd take it!! NYU is ridiculously expensive otherwise.

I don't think that many people know about it because it is only open to NYC residents. I just figured that there could be someone from NYC on CC who's heard of the Lewis Rudin Scholarship and could give me some info.

Great opportunity. Congratulations. Go for it.

Thanks everyone. It's good to know that all the nights spent doing homework and all the time spent prepping for and taking the SAT were worth it.

I found out today that another student from my class got the same scholarship. He applied to a different NYU college though (CAS). My counselor told me I'd be crazy to turn it down.

Frist of all, Congrats on the scholarship.

your counselor should wait until the rest of your financial aid package comes in.

While 20K is nice, you need to find out the following:

Is the scholarship automatically renewable
Is it renewable for the same amount of money (20K each year)
Is there an opportunity to get more?
Is there a GPA requirement attached to keeping the scholarship?
If yes, is there a phase in to the GPA requirement?
What happens if you don't maintain the GPA (as NYU is quick to take back their money)
What will the rest of your FA package look like? If you have a 20k scholarship (NYU states their average FA package is $20,095, so I would not look for any more money from them other than of workstudy and what ever federal monies - stafford & perkins loans, Pell and TAP ) and must still find a away to come up with the 27k balance that the COA at NYU requires (maybe less if you communte), will it still be an attractive offer?

"Is the scholarship automatically renewable"

Yes

"Is it renewable for the same amount of money (20K each year)"

Yes

"Is there an opportunity to get more?"

I'm not sure.

"Is there a GPA requirement attached to keeping the scholarship?"

Again, I'm not sure. I'm used to it though. I got a scholarship to my high school for which I had to maintain a 90 average.

I didn't apply for financial aid b/c I probably wouldn't get much. My parents own their house (no mortgage) and my father makes close to 6-figures. I also plan to commute since I could always take the train or bus from where I live.
