Commuting to UCLA.

I live about 35 minutes from UCLA light traffic and about an hour with traffic. I will be an incoming Freshman and I'm not sure if I should commute. Commuting seems like my only option though besides the fact that I have no money to pay for dorming, I also have OCD and I don't do too well around strangers. Is commuting really that bad? I know that after a while commuting will be second nature to me, but I'm just scared so much new stuff coming towards me.

It’s not that bad. It’s fine if you have patience. I’ve done it for greater distances than you, but not long term. You will be very sleepy most of the day if you do that, though. You might miss out on making some dorm friends, but friends are certainly made in classes and during campus activities. Don’t worry about anything people say about dorm friends, because friends are made everywhere. Parts of the highways and roads you will take will likely be under construction at some point of your time at UCLA, and certain roads back up pretty badly, so it’ll be useful to know a couple different routes.

Cheaper is better in my book. Try to schedule your classes so that you don’t have to come 5 days a week though.

It’s not that bad. My commute my senior year usually took an hour, sometimes longer. Just stay focused in your studies is what I’d recommend. If you feel you need to talk to someone, make an appointment or join a group at CAPS. If you feel like you may not do well your first quarter take one of your classes pass/no pass until you get comfortable with the workload. I’m sure you’ll do great.
