Hello!
I am currently attending a university in Ohio and will be transferring to a university back in my home town in Michigan. I am currently debating between living on campus and commuting the 40 minutes to school.
I have been living in a dorm for my first year of college and have not had the greatest time. My roommate is very lame and doesn’t like to do any fun college things like going to parties and sporting events. My neighbors in the dorms are extremely loud and I have found myself calling the front desk multiple times.
So as I said it will be 40 minutes to drive to campus and he university is located in a busy city where rush hour can be a little insane. I do not have my own car currently but will buy or lease one if I end up commuting.
This past year I have had a hard time being away from my family and not being able to come home a lot of times. My twin sister currently attends the university that I will be transferring to but I cannot room with her because she is in the honors college and I will not be applying and she is living in the honors dorms that I cannot live in. I find it easier to do homework at home because I feel more obligated with my mom around.
I also really want to help out with the volleyball team at my high school, but feel like people will judge me for going back to the high school.
If anybody has any advise let me know.
Living at home so that it is easier to have time to commit to volunteering with the team makes perfect sense. No one half-way responsible is going to “judge” for doing that! You aren’t going to HS again as a student, you are going as an assistant coach.
Try to plan your classes so that your commute an be done at a non-rush-hour time of day, or so that you needn’t drive to campus every day of the week.
It sounds like you want to live at home. Do what you want to do, never let what you think society wants you to do dictate your decisions. Do what you think is best for you.
Live at home. No one will judge you and it sounds like that is where you will be most comfortable. Having a twin at the school will allow you many opportunities that most commuters won’t have.
Calling the front desk to report dorm mates does not endear you to anyone and can actually isolate you.
I commuted from home to school and it was a 45-60min drive with traffic and 30 min with no traffic. Sleeping in your own bed beats living in a small drom.
A lot of my friends are and always have been commuters. I don’t think it negatively impacted their experience whatsoever.
