Commuting?

Hello,

I'm going to be a incoming freshmen next year studying engineering. I was wondering if I made a good decision to commute since I only live 10-15 minutes away. My parents do not really care if I do either dorming or commuting. But I do not want to put the financial burden on them. They are partially paying for my education, but not fully. So I am trying to save as much as I can. I might live in-campus at a apartment senior or junior year. One of my friends (goes to the same college studying engineering as well) didn't really have a good experience and we have the same personality (introverted) so I really don't want to dorm if I wouldn't like the experience.

If you live that close, commuting seems like the smart choice. Because you’re so close to the school, you’re probably not gonna miss too much if you pay attention.

It’s not bad, especially if you live that close.

If your parents are willing to pay, let them and live in a dorm. Dorm life is an important part of the college and life experience.

^Not really. Save that money for a car, study abroad or whatever else.

You’re smart to think about saving money, and it sounds like commuting might be best. There are a lot of ways to get to know people outside of the dorms. I’ve lived off campus for the two years I’ve been in college, and I don’t feel like I’ve missed anything. As long as you’re involved in your classes and school activities, you’ll still feel like a part of the college. It sounds like you’re not that interested in dorm life anyway.

I am in the same situation right now, I live 20-30 minutes away from my college campus depending on the traffic. I am really considering commuting since it would save me $11,000 a year.

I would agree that you are making a smart decision with the commuting. It is such a good idea for many reasons. You are giving yourself time to adjust to college life for one. People don’t realize how hard the switch to college can be. With being able to go home at the end of the day, you will have the security of your home surroundings.

The fact that you live so close will mean that you can go back and forth as you need to. It won’t be a huge hassle if you want to go home after classes and then go back for some event.

Saving money is a big deal too. Since you have the responsibility of paying for part of your schooling that is already something that you understand. If you are able to save for a few years it can go towards a better car( or just a car, if you don’t have one).

There are a lot of expenses that come with living away from home. If you have nothing more now than paying for gas and insurance, it is going to make life easier.

Thank you everyone for your input! :)
