Could anyone please give me some insight on where UF stands when compared to these other schools? Interested in hearing about engineering program, rankings, campus environment, social life, party scene, anything really! Thanks!
Stats:
GPA – 4.0
SAT – 2050
Maryland – waiting for decision
Pitt – accepted
Rutgers – accepted
Michigan – deferred (boo)
Lehigh – waiting for decision
Hmm…Michigan (engineering) is a step ahead of the rest. Then comes Maryland and UF. The others trail a ** little ** bit behind. All are fine for your UG degree in engineering. Keep in mind that your options could be limited, based on the school you choose. Maryland doesn’t offer a BS in Industrial or Nuclear Engineering, PITT doesn’t offer a BS in Aerospace, etc. So do some research and make sure the program you want is available (or if it’s limited access, like Biomedical Engineering at UF).
@Gator88NE Thanks! I was deferred from Michigan last month, which I was pretty disappointed about. They’ve had a lot of issues with enrollment in the past years apparently and finally did something about it this year. They deferred a lot of highly qualified candidates, many more qualified than myself, from both my school and all around the country. Tough luck. Maryland, Lehigh, and Florida are all in a three-way tie at the moment, with Maryland leading a little bit (haven’t gotten to visit Gainesville yet – planning to do so soon). My counselor says she is pretty sure that I’ll get into the rest of my schools. Also, I’m interested in electrical engineering, if that helps you at all. Again, thanks for the reply!
It doesn’t snow in Gainesville…(well, it makes the news if it does). Made the happiest freshman list. Maybe 'cause students don’t have to thaw out continuously. It really is a small town feel with lots going on. Gainesville keeps growing because people graduate but don’t want to leave (except in the summer when it DOES get hot.)
Campus is wonderful and social life is wonderful. Great college town. Good transportation system. Easy to get around by bus or bike.
But unfortunately the engineering students are all in their holes studying…they don’t always make the parties. But I’m sure they must lift their heads from their desks and get the nose out of their books at some point.
Engineering overall is ranked at 23 for public universities but higher than that for most engineering disciplines. Ranking depends on what you’d like to specialize in.
Can you bring up your SAT?
@gouf78 – Thanks! I’ll definitely be down to visit if I am accepted. We were supposed to visit a few months ago, but had weather-related issues. About my SAT: its pretty much too late at this point. I was dealing with some injuries during my testing that hindered my ability to do better, but my counselor said that kids from my school (prep school) have gotten into UF with considerably lower GPAs and lower SATs that I have, so I am hoping I will get in!
