Comparison For Organizational Psychology Program - Baruch And Teachers College Columbia University

Hello Everyone,

Was hoping some of you could shed some light on the two programs listed: Baruch and Teachers College Columbia University. Both for an M.A Organizational Psychology degree.

What I have gathered:

Baruch comes in at around $14,000 without fees while TC Columbia is $60,000+.

Baruch seems to have a better opportunity to do research with professors.
TC Columbia said no research is available for M.A. students, and no financial aide is available.

The Baruch program is 36 credits
TC Columbia is 45 credits.

It is difficult to find rankings in this field. While Columbia Psychology ranks elite in the nation this is a separate program that IMO should not be lumped together with Columbia rankings.

There is no denying that the degree is more prestigious from TC Columbia, but I am not sure there is enough bang for the buck. Their graduate statistics are also skewed because they lump the salary results with other programs in leadership and development. I have also heard about a "degree mill" mentality at TC Columbia because it seems no opportunities are available for non Doctorate students.

What do you guys think? Any opinions would help! Has anyone heard about either program?

I’m in Columbia’s psychology department at GSAS; we have absolutely nothing to do with the psychology programs at TC. They’re run differently.

I had one friend who did her MA in social-org psych at TC. She was already in the military and was doing the master’s so that she could teach at West Point.

The programs are also quite different. TC’s social-org program uses social psychology as a lens through which to study organizations. The idea is that social forces have an impact on group processes. Baruch’s program is more of a traditional I/O program. There’s a lot of overlap, but they’re going to have different foci. TC’s will be a bit more theoretical and Baruch’s, more applied.

Personally, I say save your money and go to Baruch.

Thank you for your reply.

I think I am leaning towards Baruch as I am not ready to shut the door on a doctorate after.

Thank You :)
