competitions and awards

Hey guys. Does anyone know any good competitions and award-opportunities for a junior that will look good on the college app?

I know of the Cola-Cola Award, the Scholastic Writing Awards, and I believe National Forensic Society (Debate) stuff looks good. There are bunches more, but I can't remember them at the moment.

anyone else?

AMC? making USAMO.. (or at least the AIME)
and bunch of other math stuff if you're into math

You can participate in the NFTE Business competiton. The federal Reserve Bank has a Fed challenge competition for HS

"We The People" team -- basically constitutional debate team

umm...

USAMO qualifier and Siemens semifinalist
with like
USNCO or USAPHO or USABO semifinalist

I would say puts you basically into atleast MIT-or some college of that caliber (if you are into science/math)

These things won't GET you into a MIT or Caltech. They will help, but the overall package has to be extremely strong. Do things because you like then and are interested, not because you're trophy hunting.

Intel STS finalist isn't even enough to be the guaranteed magic ticket if the school thinks you aren't a good match.

NCTE Writing Achievement Awards
International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF)
National Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS)
USAMO
Intel/Seimens
Davidson Fellows
...the list goes on, but most of these are extremely competitive/require at least a year of novel and independent research.

sigh if only i knew about thesethings in frosh year
