Competitive high schools?

When i took the tour at Vandy, they said the first thing they do with your application is have the admissions counselor for you area see how competitive your high school is? How do they figure that out? My school is private with only 38 students in my class. What makes a school get ranked as highly competitive? Because EVERYONE at my school is competitive. Okay, well not everyone, but like ten of the 38 students in my class work work work work work hard, and that's a lot of students when there are only 38 in a class. But then again, my school can't possibly be as competitive as other schools because they only offer 11 APs. However, they make these AP classes extremely difficult, which is good, but like they make practice tests worth 70% of our grade, and if you get a 3 on the practice test you get a C in the class, 4 gets you a B, and 5 gets you an A. But how do colleges know this?

Schools usually have to submit a school profile - ask your counselor for your school's and see what it says.
