What is a really competitive major for Cornell? I applied as a Communications major and I'm not sure how competitive this is. I know ILR and Business are very competitive but how competitive is Communications?

What do you mean by competitive - tough to get accepted or tough once you’re taking classes? Communication is, as at any university, one of the easier majors due to its rather light subject matter. I’m not sure if there are a lot of applicants for few spots, though.

I mean competitive as in tough to get accepted to haha my bad :)

Any major that’s overrepresented or popular.
Engineering, biology, hotel, business, etc. are pretty hard. Then again, getting into the privates is pretty hard too.

Antiflamer - do you know whether Communication falls in that “overrepresented” category? I don’t think it does, but not sure.

Also - can we please stop with the private / contract thing? Communication is in a contract school and there’s only a few percentage points difference overall. Certain contract programs are more competitive.

The biggest difference is that there’s generally a different skillset required for the more technical fields (agriculture, architecture, etc…) that don’t cater to the general SAT/gpa paradigm of liberal arts programs. Communication doesn’t fall in that, though.

Is computer science or computer engineering at cornell impacted?

isnt applied economics and management pretty difficult to get into? the acceptance rate for that school is 14.5%

AEM is one of the most difficult programs to get into at Cornell. Very, very competitive because it is one of 2 undergrad business programs in the Ivy League. Also, it is a prime intra-university transfer destination, so the the number of freshman admitted is quite small.

I think A&S should be by far the toughest college, but do they sort based on your intended major? I put down philosophy and classics somewhere.

For CALS you have to apply by major. For CAS you don’t. Some majors in CALS are extremely competitive, including AEM, Animal Science and Bio (maybe others as well).

CALS’ AEM is considered the most competitive major at Cornell, with an acceptance rate of 15% (class of 2014).

i applied to communications this year too

Does anyone know how competitive Urban and Regional Studies in the School of Architecture, Art, and Planning is?

I think architecture is like 7% or something stupidly small like that, and since it accounts for maybe around half of AAP admits, Art+CRP might be around 18%-20%. Just a guess, since they don’t have admit rates for each major.

So does communications fall in one of those “overrepresented” majors? According to everyone’s posts it seems as if it’s a relatively easier major to get accepted to

How about history…particularly history for a korean male?

Psychology?

It’s easier to get in if you apply to a program that not many people apply to and you’ve shown interest in it. Communications major is easier to get into relative to CALS.

Haha sweet :D. maybe that’ll be a good thing for me on Wednesday!

How does DSoc stack up relative to CALS?
