Is Umich engineering competitive? and how are the sciences as well? I wish to study BME and would like to know if its competitive or cutthroat?

I’d like to know as well, what makes it either competitive or cutthroat?

it’s not that competitive.

There’s a difference between difficult and competitive. Enginieering classes are the most difficult, but definitely not that competitive.
Competitive is used to describe Ross or premed classes. Ross classes can be very easy. but they are competitive as in people shoot for the high grades, while in engineering half the people worry about passing and not failing out than trying to get straight As. so make it hard either way, but through a different route

bearcats, would you say people work together on homework, study together? or is it more people try and do it on their own?

there will be people who get A’s, who don’t seem very hard working. Believe it or not, some people actually think michigan engineering is easy. Then, there will be people who get C’s who study all day at the library, these people will generally think engineering is cutthroat. But Michigan engineering by design, has so much teamwork curriculum that you will spend a lot of time working on things with other people… sometimes too much time.

It’s true everywhere. That’s why they should have IQ testing replace SATs for college admissions… and then use GPA to gauge your work ethic.

"sometimes too much time. "

definitely agree, especially if you team is totally unmotivated and you are the only one who wants to get the crap done.

anyway my friends and I study and do homework together…we also make our “cheat sheet” for exams together just to make sure we dont leave out formulas and stuff

lmao… something about that statement relaxes me so much.

DRMAN54 i know what u mean! it made me laugh

LOL. I agree with DRMAN54. Anyways, Engineering in Michigan is very difficult. I have many friends in top universities, many Ivies, and others such as Georgetown, Emory, and etc. but they seem to have less work load than Michigan Engineers. They always have time in their hands on weekends. The work load in Michigan Engineering is insane, and I think its probably the most work loaded department in Umich. That having been said, Engineers aren’t as competitive as Premed or Business majors. Many Engineers help each other out, and the whole concept of Michigan engineering is team work, so they encourage us to help each other out. Now BME, in my opinion would be bit more competitive than other majors because many BME majors are premeds who are looking to go to Medical school, therefore, I would assume there would be some competition there but nothing too extraordinary. Also BME has a GPA requirement of 3.2 I believe, which isn’t easy if you decide to take decently challenging courses. So yes competition exists in BME, but you will find that people are always willing to help, and that only competition is yourself.

what is funny about what bearcats said.? did i miss something?

On average what kind of work do you get for hw that takes such a long time? I’m getting a little nervous…

don’t worry. Its not that much homework. If you manage your time wisely you can get your fair share of sleep.

engineering is a lot of work, but you should always be able to get 8 hours of sleep per night. people who say they can’t sleep/because they got so much homework are those that procrastinate.
