Hi all! I thought I would start a thread now that the December 15th deadline has passed for anyone to talk about the programs, different essay topics, and of course, to find support when decisions are made in a few months. Good luck to all!
I applied for the General scholarships as well as the Haslam Scholars and Chancellor’s Honors Programs. Haslam was my #1 out of the two.
Stats:
ACT: 34
SAT: 1500
Gender: Female
In-State/OOS: OOS Florida
Major: Animal Science with Pre-Vet Track
Haslam Scholars
Essay #1 (1-10): 9- I really enjoyed this particular essay and felt like it was very easy to write for. I talked about teaching, mistakes, leadership, and other famous scholars.
Essay #2 (1-10): 7- I wasn’t super crazy about this topic but I did delve in very heavily to my past for my biggest mistake. Hopefully they appreciate lots of emotion.
Chancellor’s Honors
Essay: I really liked this topic as well. I choose to write about the failures of Thomas Edison for my essay.
Just found out that I am a Haslam Scholar Semi-Finalist today by email! Has anyone else heard about their respective programs?
Congratulations!
Did they notify you through VIP account or personal email? I would be surprised in my son wasn’t a semi-finalist as we are in state and he is in top 2% of his class at a very large competitive public high school. ACT=35, 4.0 unweighted GPA with 11 AP classes and 2 DE, essays were strong, strong ECs, volunteer hours, and varsity athlete X 4 years.
@WDWFan , I was notified through my personal email. It came straight to my inbox and was entitled ‘Haslam Scholars Decision Letter.’ Thank you very much, I’m extremely excited!
Did the AP and Dual Enrollment classes your son took have a correlation with his major? Since I’m a STEM major I’ve taken all the General Sciences through either AP or Dual Enrollment as well as Calculus and Psychology which are required. I took a few histories, English, and humanities to cover my Gen Ed requirements too.
I’m only top 7% but my senior class is 1,100 students so I think that makes up for it. I have a 3.92 unweighted and 4.76 weighted at high school. I have a 3.95 at college.
I’m not a varsity athlete but I’m a theatre kid and a competitive varsity Speech and Debate Student. I’m also a student athlete math tutor and an elementary school reading tutor. I’m in NHS and I’ve held a job for the past two years. I like to think my essays were strong.
In all honesty, your son sounds like a strong applicant and I wish him good luck! Interviews start January 5th so he definitely should have heard by now. Was Haslam listed as his #1 when he applied?
When should students hear about if they got into Honors? My son is waiting until he finds out to make his decision on a college. He is into Honors at the other colleges he applied to so UTK is the last one he needs to hear from. Any info appreciated.
@ncbusymom , I have been told by the Director of the Haslam program that Chancellor’s, Honors Leadership, and Haslam Decisions will go out by February 1st.
@Ella582 Do you know if those Honors programs come with scholarships, or are they separate. My son applied for the Leadership Honor’s program and general scholarship. He finds out February 9th about University of Florida and we are trying to understand all financials before making a decision, but I’m feeling the pressure of getting a dorm, etc.
@Vtborgor , I’m not quite sure about what Honors Leadership offers scholarship wise but I know that Haslam is a full-ride and Chancellor’s for an out of state student reduces you to instate tuition almost like an out of state fee waiver. I’m thinking that Honors Leadership would be something similar to Chancellor’s but you might need to contact the program head to ask. As for being notified of the scholarship that comes with it at the same time as program acceptance, I’m not sure.
As for departmental and institutional scholarships other than the Volunteer Scholarship, all I was told was that those would be awarded over the next several months as decisions were made. Typically they come out starting mid-February through late March from what I was told last year when I visited.
Are you guys fellow Floridians? I’m waiting to hear back from FSU this week and UF on the 9th as well. Tell your son good luck from me!
Regarding UTK Honors programs, I looked back at my notes from our campus visit last July and had written down that all honors programs (including Leadership) waive the OOS portion of tuition but only Haslam covers full tuition. UTK One Stop has been helpful in answering our questions about OOS scholarships.
So if you get accepted into the honors program, do you still get your volunteer scholarship?
^ I think that the Volunteer Scholarship stays with you; it’s an automatic reduction that accompanies admission, as I understand it.
Yeah, you still keep Volunteer it just reduces to the In-State value. Like I currently have the $18,000 a year Volunteer which I believe reduces to $8,000 at the in-state rate if you are given an out of state waiver.
@Ella582, Thank you! Yes we are from Florida, anxiously awaiting February 9th. Good Luck to you!
From the UT Honors and Scholars Programs Facebook Page “That’s a wrap, folks! Ms. Hunter has spent the last week at select high schools in West Tennessee handing out invitations to our Honors and Scholars Programs! Congratulations to our new #honorsvols! For everyone not in West Tennessee, don’t fret! A little birdie told me decision emails will be reaching your inboxes sometime next week! #kindleyourflame #newvols #westTN”
Read somewhere else that they will be release before 2/1/18 so sometime in the next three days.
I just got the email that I got into chancellors so definitely check your inboxes!
I just got the email that I got into Leadership!!
DD got her’s today too!!
DD got hers this afternoon as did her roommate. Any idea what the chance of scholarship is if you are CHP?
Does anyone know if the 1794 scholars also waives OOS tuition?
