Complete USNews 2010 Undergrad Engineering Rankings for PhD Granting Schools

How much should the rankings affect your choice of schools? How much better is the number 20 school compared to the number 30 or 40 school… for example.

Much is talked about in this sub forum on ‘rankings’, or ‘a ranked enginneering program’. There is rarely a reference to which ranking this is applied, but it seems that everyone is pointing to USNR. USNR uses peer assessment as 25 pct of its weight.

I heard somewhere, and I wish I bookmarked it, that companies do not (necessarily?) use USNR for THEIR rankings, but had their own. I’d love to see the rankings that good companies use in their recruitment. anyone?

Well, I think I can add my 2 cents to that one …

Large corporations actually DO have their own rankings, however, it’s not necessarily based exclusively on academics …
Without revealing which company I work for in the Chemical Industry, I can say that yes, our corporate HR dept has relations to several colleges that they ‘usually’ hire from. Quite honestly, I don’t believe that the selection of those colleges was based exclusively on academics, but to a large extent also on ‘local patriotism’: our company has large production sites in TX and LA, so ‘we’ hire from Texas A&M. Another large site is in MI, so we hire from U Mich. But I’m convinced that in the ‘regional’ selection, the traditional rankings (USNews) are used to compare …

Having said that, it is clear that ‘academic rigor’ was one of the key-criteria in the selection of the colleges, but not the only one! Otherwise, we would hire also from Rice (which we don’t, at least not actively!) or MIT, Stanford, etc - probably we wouldn’t get the graduates of those ‘very’ prestigious colleges at a price that fits into our salary structure … LOL
