<p>What can actually change that is meaningful in the course of one year? It seems the only value of these is to sell a magazine.</p>

<p>Not far off. They are okay at putting schools roughly in the order of how they are viewed by others, and that is about it. Still, departments bend over backwards in order to get higher on the list due to the fact that so many people read said magazine and take the rankings for much more than they are actually worth.</p>

<p>These rankings, despite being called ugrad rankings, are obviously graduate program rankings. Who really thinks that Texas A&M offers a better undergraduate engineering program than Harvard, even if Texas A&M has a larger graduate offering?</p>

<p>I know, I know! I’ve worked in such esteemed institutions for decades. On one hand they lament and criticize the rankings and pretend to not care (among themselves), and the administrations runs in circles trying to ‘move up’. The problem though is that they don’t actually change what matters, but of course play superficial games, easy data driven stuff along the surface. Games that actually completely and absolutely undermine actual education and benefits to students. </p>

<p>And yes they can’t have the rankings move too much or that would kill their credibility. I can’t speak for this particular ranking but I know that Business Week in ranking b-schools has always used a formula with a constant so that it muted any real year to year changes (too much changed based on the data would blow the whole thing out of the water).</p>

<p>Don’t get me wrong-- of course schools really do differ in quality, but at the same time, there are really no meaningful differences between relatively close rankings. Its annoying when people give it attention and weight it doesn’t deserve.</p>

<p>Anyone working in engineering fields really thinks this. Harvard is not an engineering school and does not put any real effort into their engineering program.</p>

<p>I’m curious as to how one would argue Harvard’s undergrad engineering program is better than Texas A&M’s (assuming we’re talking purely about the engineering program and nothing else).</p>

<p>U.S. News Republishes 2011 Edition Engineering Specialty Rankings</p>

<p>As a result of several database errors, we have taken down the most recent edition of some of the specialty rankings of engineering schools and reverted to our ranking of last year. While the changes are not significant, there are some discrepancies between the originally published data and the revised rankings currently at usnews.com. </p>

<p>It still boggles me Ann Arbor is ranked so high in MechEng undergrad, hah!</p>

<p>I just graduated from UM in June and I had quite a few crap professors along the way. FEA and CFD are not even part of the mandatory curriculum. I graduated with honors and I (along with 90% of my fellow peers) am still incompetent at MATLAB, C++, or any other programming language. I honestly think they need to revamp alot of the courses and fire some worthless profs who do a terrible job at teaching straight from the book, imho. </p>

<p>That being said, I loved my college experience and the campus and facilities in Ann Arbor are second to none. At the end of the day I do feel I recieved a world class education because the community of people at the engineering school is brilliant. Additionally, there were plenty of opportunities to participate in extracurricular activites (student project teams, research) which I spent a good amount of time on to make up for what was not taught in class. These are very well funded and full of bright students. </p>

<p>But I felt that the education in the classroom on behalf of the U. was garbage. </p>

<p>My 2c, everyone knows these ratings are rubbish.</p>
