Macs have an education discount of 10%. Some colleges have deals. for example, Ohio State use to give free desktop dells away because they had a deal with Dell.

if your going the pc route keep an eye out because dell and other places have huge discounts (not necessarily educational) for example i just ordered my laptop with a 750 discount from dell plus if you work them on the phone it is possible to get more. Best thing i can recommend is if money isnt a problem be ready to jump at and opportunity when i arises even if its earlier then you were planning because you could end up saving alot of money.

I bought my Dell through my university's purchase program, with the following discounts:
-10% off Memory, CD/DVD, and Hard Drive upgrades
-12% off the entire system
-$450 off the price (as it was above $1600)
-and a $200 rebate because I took the top-of-the-line warranty. (4 yr. at-home w/ CompleteCare)

Original price: $3220
What I paid: $2300

at our school. Laptops went for like sub 500.
I got Windows, Visual Studio, Office, Publisher, Visio, Project all for $80
