computer engineering vs. computer science major

what is the difference? people describe computer engineering as if it were a subset of electrical engineering, but it seems that both majors lead into the same career field

It a branch of electrical engineering. Anything related Digital System, Smart Device, Microelectronics and Communication are Computer engineering. Electrical or Computer engineering need to know programming in order to design stuff above. That why a lot of EE or CE major can get a job in software engineering.

Computer engineering is closer to the EE side… focusing on computer hardware.

Computer science is closer to the math side… focusing on computation itself.

Software engineering deals with the production of software… this may be its own separate degree, or may be absorbed by CS and CE to varying degrees.

Software engineering is much more under computer science than computer engineering.
