Why? Can't we still party together? After all, it's the INTERNET. You said that, right?

Exactly. :D

Okay, everyone else can continue with the discussion on computer protection (we all know it's important to have protection)...

aww...why must we all fight? c'mon, shake hands! :)

home pcs don't need expensive corporate softwares for protection. actually the best protection is user awareness.

Free of charge:

Of course, you will need to prove that you are a student (NetID & password)

NU provides Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition
[/quote]

blinks Oh, it does?

...wait a sec, is [nusavinst.exe] really the corporate version? How do I tell?

...Because I just installed Avast!, and it seems to work okay (alright, minus the being-able-to-scan-memory (or so my dad says) and unable to scan an archive password protected Dell90days.tmp stuff...crazy McAfee...). I'd really rather not uninstall Avast!, install Norton, find that it isn't the corporate version, and then have to uninstall it, and find that it doesn't uninstall cleanly like McAfree...

Well you can either take my word for it, or install it yourself.

You can actually break down the file name:

NU SAV Inst.exe

Home versions aren't "Symantec Antivirus," they're "Norton Antivirus."

I have some good news, and I have some bad news (once again). It is not THE corporate edition, but it is a variant which (hopefully) will work very similar to THE corporate edition. You would probably be best to download it so you don't have any problems integrating into the NU network when you get to school.

Benz, what is "THE corporate edition"? How does it differ from the mere "variant" NU provides?

THE corporate edition has a quite a bit more features in it; I checked the file size, and THE corporate edition is 455 MB while the one that NU provides is around 17-18 MB. It's not to say that THE corporate edition is 25x better, but it does have more features. I'm not sure as to the effectiveness of NU's program, but if it is similar to the THE corporate version that I have it should work pretty ewll.

Sorry to belabor a point that is probably meaningless to all, but I don't agree with Benz. There is only one Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition client. There are two main differences between Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition and Norton Antivirus for home users.

The first difference is the user interface. SAV's is cleaner and less graphical, which suits the "business" environment well. But this is merely a superficial difference.

The second difference, the more important one, is that SAV has the ability to be managed from a central location, from a server that is controlled by an IT staff. This means that updates are pushed to each computer from a central location, without the need for individual users to manually update each computer. This makes sense for the computers in a lab or a library, for example. BUT this second feature of SAV has been turned OFF for the NU community, so this entire paragraph does not even apply.

Merely pointing out the size difference is irrelevant unless you can point to specific feature differences. And Benz may simply be getting that 455MB figure from a CD, not his actual program folder on his PC.

And one last thing. Look at the second link on this page. The SAME update file applies to all those different versions. Whatever differences each may have is insignifigant. After all, an anti-virus exists to catch viruses, nothing more.

LoL, uc_benz, CC is addictive. You can keep telling yourself you won't be back (I said the same thing once the college admission process was over for me) but I'd be willing to bet a week's spending money that you'll relapse XD

I downloaded the Symantec software that NU provided, but I can't get LiveUpdate to work ... it won't connect. Anyone else having this problem, or know how to fix it?

This may be a really, really stupid question, but I'm pretty computer illiterate.
I have a Mac. The man at the Apple Store (granted, his opinion may be a little...biased) told me that I didn't need to install any virus protection software onto my powerbook, and that norton was "across the board bad" for Macs.

Do any of you have any idea of that's correct or not? Also, I'm confused as to whether Northwestern requires the virusware or just strongly suggests it.
Thanks for any responses!

I had the same problem, but fortunately it can be fixed. It is listed under "Known issues" on the NU IT site. http://www.it.northwestern.edu/software/staff/dept/sav/win/known-issues.html

Here's how it goes: (You must do the steps in this order)

Look in the folder C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate for the file "S32luhl1.dll" If it exists, delete it. If not, continue to step 2.

Delete the "Settings.LiveUpdate" file. Depending on your operating system, the location of this file may vary.
*For Windows 2000 and XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
*For Windows 95/98: C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
When you're looking for it, the "Application Data" folder might be hidden so it's easier just to type the whole path name in the address box on top to go directly to that folder. There may be several files with the words "Settings.LiveUpdate" in them - delete the one that doesn't have a number in front of it.

Now, rerun LiveUpdate and it should work.

admitmeplz, give it a break LOL. I'm telling you I have THE corporate edition, and it is different from the one that NU provides. Agree with me or not it really doesn't make a difference. If you want to download it then download it; I'm just saying it's not THE corporate edition so I can't give advice on how good it runs.

And lily, I'll be gone :D

neom, you rock. thanks!

yep no prob! it worked then?

it did! i can now download all the illegal **** i want and not worry about viruses ... i think ^^

HeyIveGotWorkToDo, I'm pretty sure that's correct. There's no need to install Norton for Macs because there aren't any viruses for Macs to begin with.

Thanks, Scarlet. I should probably know those type of things, but, at this point, I barely know how to do anything but turn my laptop on to use AIM :)
