testudo--
i do take offense to the sweeping generalizations you made that macs are only for people who want their computer to tell them what to do, and that women at UMD are unattractive. and actually, i'm not one of the women you spoke of... i'm one of those who lives in the college ave area in a sorority house, so obviously you weren't speaking directly to me. it's offensive nonetheless.

i agree with you that this board is a place for positive and negative opinions. but i do think it's acceptable for me to point out to the potential UMDers on this board that not everyone has such strong (and constant) negative opinions about our school and the students at it.

You serious? You need to read more of my posts. A MAJORITY of them are positive. I love Maryland. I really am sorry that you got that impression because I bleed turtle everyday.

It's what I think. From what I have seen, Macs are suitable for people who don't know what they are doing on a computer. Is that so bad? It obviously strikes a chord if you take offense.

Two. I have spoken to MANY males on campus who agree that the vast majority of girls at the school aren't attractive. Get over it. I wasn't insulting you. If someone is ugly, they are ugly, I can't help that. Sheesh.

Just to sum up, I absolutely love this school and many aspects of it. If a guy asks if there are a lot of hot chicks, I'm gunna say no, there aren't. In MYYYYY opinion (and others), the girls are not very attractive in College Park.

Seriously, I did not come to this board to be combative, the complete opposite and I have yet to personally insult anyone on this board. I give my opinion and I don't sugarcoat it.

Guess I didn't realize the opinion police roamed these here parts, sheriff.

the rudeness isn't necessary, testudo. thanks for re-explaining some of your positive posts i obviously skipped over. now if you don't mind, i think some of the other people on this board might want to get back to the topic at hand.

i agree lindz...

as for macs...i have always had macs and they are the greatest computers ever for school. they are the cleanest, smoothest runnign systems on the market and nothing beats them. they never slow me down when i am working and i am able to multitask tremendously

people on this board act like the professors care what kind of computer you have...well they dont. as long as you get the work done correctly and on time you could use a typewriter for all they care.

as for dells and hps...they seem to be the ones that crash the most (whether its from dc++, etc.) and i see many students having to call geeksquad or travel to bestbuy during the schoolweek to get it fixed.

make the right decision.

get a mac.

that's fine by me!

i agree that macs are very reliable and smooth running, there's no questioning that. so yes for just school stuff, macs are probably the better option. my original post was mostly referring to the use of the computer after college. for the $$$, in a PC, you are getting a more lasting system, power wise. when i say power i'm not talking about gaming, just multi-task and processing power. in my opinion, upgrading a mac is more difficult and more expensive. i bought my laptop before my senior year of high school and it hasn't slowed down one bit in 2 years and i know that if i wanna pop another gig of RAM in there, it will only cost me $80 or so. god knows how much the apple store will charge you for it.

to sum up my opinion once and for all, i think of macs as there own proprietary platform. a lot of things are mac specific (they are getting better) and there still are compatability issues. PC interface to me is what i think of as generic, but in a good way. easy to tailor to your exact needs and not what the apple store carries. that is all i'm saying.

Mac might win the battle while your in school, but if you are willing to drop another 1-2K 4 years later, why even ask what comp to get because money obviously isn't an object.

my $.02 of course

get a pc. most school computers are pc's. macs are cool. but only get a mac to be cool. seriously, if you are an engineering major. never get a mac. get it if you wanna write essays or be "cool". seriously, the software that must engineers, comp sci ppl, and other digital media majors use ... are NOT supported by macs. :-(

my first 5 computers were macs... the last 3 computers i had... 2 were pc's. macs are cooler, but pc's are more versatile.

what kind of software are you talking about for the kim engineering school?
