I have heard thru my son that Claire Bono is a horrible teacher. When my son comes up for air after his finals I will ask him why.

My son just sent me an email saying “NEVER EVER EVER willingly take a Bono class”. The only instructor he has ever said that about at USC.

Claire Bono is universally regarded as terrible among CS students. For CSCI 102, however, the second semester CS class, she was replaced this semester by Brent Nash, who is really great. He’s younger, works for JPL, explains the material well, and is a really cool guy.

Thanks so much for the feedback! What about Ghyam? The fall schedule has listed him for the first level CSCI course. Son has taken AP Comp SC and got a 4. Can he get credit for that and avoid this prof?

I really thought that USC would have better teachers.

My son says Ghyam is okay. Bono was his only complaint. A 4 might test him out of this class.

Ghyam is good if you’re going in without any knowledge of programming at all. Otherwise, he’s just really dry and boring. His class consists of him lecturing from the front of a classroom and writing some stuff on the board almost illegibly. I didn’t go after the first week, and I still got an A in the class without a problem.

If you do well on the AP exam, you won’t automatically be exempted from CSCI 101 (Ghyam’s class) because USC starts with C++ and the AP test is in Java. If you study C++ over the summer a little, though, and convince Ghyam that you know everything that he’s going to cover (not all that much), you can skip to CSCI 102.

Thanks! When should he talk to Ghyam (is he Indian?) - Is this possible at Orientation?
So maybe son can skip 101 and go to 102…wonder who teaches that.

How are the other CS teachers? Son is looking forward to CS courses I hope we wont feel disappointed.

He won’t won’t be dispointed. Dont worry asbout that. CS is a very hard major with many challenging classes. If he is willing to put the time in he will be fine. Also I wanted to mention that the students in the major are a very close group. I think doing projects together realy encourages that. They help each other out frequently.

Read post #4 for the teacher who is teaching the 2nd semster course.

Oh thats good to know. I hope Brent will teach the fall semester too!

Dammit Nash is being subbed for Ghyam for 102… I mean like Ghyam was pretty good but I wouldve liked to have experienced Nash firsthand lol

I cant believe I am back here again asking for S2 this time around ;)

S2 is going to be a freshman this fall, he is taking APCS right now and will most likely get a 5 he says. Does not mean he will skip CS 101L…or can he?

I guess Ghyam is still teaching the course.

^S just finishing freshman year as CS major. He got a 5 on AP CS but no CS major is allowed to skip 101L.

Thanks NC!

How was Cs101 and which prof did your son have?
