Hi everyone,
I am currently a student at MPC, and I'm planning to transfer to UCSC this Fall. There are 2 majors offered at UCSC that makes me so interested in, computer science and information system management (ISM). The foundation courses for both majors are quite similar IMO. I would like to ask everyone something before making my decision ...

1/Is double major in CS and ISM doable? What is the courseload in both?

2/It takes me abt an hour driving to get to UCSC (no traffic jam lol). Should I drive to school everyday (which means still live at my house in Monterey), or should I choose to live on campus?

3/For the CS major, I am now lacking one physics course (I only have one, the other offered this semester at MPC conflicts with my CS : Data Structure course). Therefore, I have to drop it, cuz CS is more important IMHO. Will that make my chance of getting to UCSC lowered?

4/Because IGETC is not recommended for my majors, I did not take any GE course at cc yet. Does that mean I have to complete them all at UCSC? Or could I return to cc and complete some during the summer prior to transferring and the summer between junior and senior year?

5/As stated above, I already had the course equivalent to PHYS6A offered at UCSC, so could I continue to take PHYS6C there? Or I must take PHYS6A again? I want to ask this vice-versa too, because one of my friends plans to take PHYS6A this summer session at UCSC, then return to his cc and takes the remaining course equivalent to PHYS6C or 6B. Is that possible?

I know that's a lot of questions, but there are too many things I am unsure abt and I really want to hear you guys' opinions ... so, thanks in advance :D

Thanks dude. No more question abt the last four, but for the first one, I am just in love with both majors lol. I have done introductory macro and micro at cc in replacement of ISM50, which is not available at cc. For both majors foundation courses, it is as followed:
CS = Math (lots of 'em) + 2 CS classes + 2 Physics / Chemistry courses
ISM = Math, 2CS (same as above) + 2 Econ + 1 Accounting class
I’ll have gotten all Math and CS by the end of this spring sem. The two things that I lack are one Physics (for CS) and the Accounting class (for ISM). I just wonder if I can do both majors without taking an extra year like you said, hmm. Maybe a lil bit too difficult …
Anyways, some more questions
1/Will courses taken in the summer at UCSC counted towards the 60-units requirement and the articulated courses? I plan to take PHYS 6C this summer at UCSC, and by doing that, I think I will finish the physics requirement ;)

2/I took a look at the ISM curriculum chart, and I noticed there are some courses look like repeating each other. For ex, I already got Math 19A and 19B, and I still need two more AMS courses??? I mean, they are all Math for Engineering, so what’s the difference?

3/I heard that graduates from Baskin’ school of Engineering got recruited by many famous companies located in Silicon Valley. Is that really true?

4/And one final, completely unrelated question to this thread. I am now an international student holding a F-1 visa. I have been living in CA for more than a year, so could I become a resident? Paying non-resident tuition fee is a lot for my family (that’s the reason why I want to live at home instead in dorm), so I am just curious abt this. Some of my friends said that students holding F-1 visa cannot be resident. Is that right? :(

I can’t answer your first or last question, sorry.

If you’re looking at AMS10 and AMS20, you forget that there is more to math than calculus! AMS10 covers linear algebra and AMS20 covers differential equations.

Absolutely. Google, Microsoft, and EA recruit here, among many others.

Nah, no probs. Thanks a lot for these kind answers. Just wonder if there is anyone in this forum major in ISM, so I can get a lil bit advice abt it …

Btw, what’s your major Liesel? And which college are you currently living in?

Wow, game design huh? It must be very interesting. How is the courseload so far? :D

Anyway, another thing I’d like to ask is the pass/ not pass basis. I’m only allowed to take at most 14 / 60 semester units at cc on that basis, and I haven’t used it yet. I took English 1A last Fall and got a B because the courseload on CS was so heavy and lots of stuff, so I did not spend much time for essay. I am going to take English 2 this spring, and I just wonder if I can take it in P/NP. I heard that some articulated courses are not allowed to take P/NP, but how abt English?

Courseload is pretty heavy. Not unbearable, but it certainly requires dedication. Not hard to come by though, most people in the CS: GD program love what they’re doing!

Taking English pass/no-pass? If that’s equivalent to the Writing 2 here, it’s not a big deal at all. I think the majority of students take it with that option.

Thanks, I’m gonna change the Writing class to P/NP, so that I have more time for other classes
And if the courseload is heavy, maybe I should take either CS or ISM and not both, hmm… Anw, thanks for your help, and hope we will meet at Santa Cruz someday lol
