I plan to major in computer science. I already got into UT Dean's Scholars honor program and Turing Scholars honor program for computer science. I know that UT will be financially accessable for me, but I was wondering do the graduates from CS at UT tend to stay in Texas or do they get job oppotunities on the east and west coast? Currently UT is at the top of my list but I don't want to stay in Texas all my life. I do plan to try to find internships outside of Texas during the summers, but for a job I want to be located outside of Texas.

According to computer scientists who work in Palo Alto and have commented on this issue here on CC, the top-recruited schools for Silicon Valley in California are:

Stanford
MIT
Carnegie Mellon
Harvard
Cal Berkeley
UT Austin
U of Washington
Georgia Tech
U of Michigan
Illinois
Princeton
Wisconsin
Brown

Obviously it will differ from firm to firm, but generally these are the top schools in that order.

Also, keep in mind that there are a lot of CS majors from around the country coming to Austin, “Silicon Hills,” after they graduate, and going to UT will give you obvious advantages there. I’m not really sure why a CS major would want to leave Austin.

lxslarry: Could you please pass on 1) When you applied 2) IS or OOS
3) Were you alerted about Turing by snail mail, email or on the Web page, and
when ?

Congratulations !

My application was complete on October 14. I am in state and my notification was by snail mail. Nothing shows up on the status page for acceptance into honor programs. All of it is by snail mail correspondance. Good luck if you are still waiting on a response.

Also I got the letter on December 12.

Thanks lxslarry. My son is OOS (CA) and applied on 12/1. He got admitted to CS in
CNS about a week ago, but it appears Turing notification will take time.
BTW, in case you haven’t decided yet, I am an UT alum myself, you will
have a fabulous experience and great education at UT. Will post back if my
son is awarded the Turing, and it appears the two of you may be classmates.

Hi! I’m also considering UT Austin, and I’ve already been accepted into the CS major and Dean’s Scholars program (woot!). I’ve yet to hear from Turing, but I submitted my application pretty late, so hopefully it’s just delayed. Do you remember how long it took them to notify you after you submitted the honors application? Also, do you think it’s important to go to the event on the 27th? It’s a long trip (I’m from OOS) and although UT is near the top of my list I’m not sure I’ll be going there. Wouldn’t it be weird to go if I haven’t accepted the admission?

The other thing I’d like to know is how long you think we can wait to apply for honors dorms. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like you can’t apply for them until you’ve accepted your spot at the university, and I likely won’t be doing that until more decisions come back in March/April. Is there a lot of competition for those spaces?

Anyway, to finally answer your question: My cousin got his CS degree from UT only a few years ago, and he started working for Microsoft in Seattle right after graduation. I don’t believe he was in the honors programs, either. So you should be fine! Congratulations on your acceptances and good luck! :)

I finished the application on October 14 and didn’t recieve acceptance until about December 12. So I think in about two months you should get yours. It might be possibly earlier because I might have submitted the application before they begun to review them. For the Dean’s Scholars event, I think it will be informational and just to give us some pull to the school. They most likely want us to keep us open to UT and their program. It is okay if you haven’t accepted the university acceptance yet and because you are out of state, they will most likely understand. For honors dorms I believe you can wait all the way up to May 1, but when you begin to recieve decisions from other schools try to decide by March/April at the latest so that you can secure a room. But I believe that most students who want honor dorms and who have been accepted into honor programs do reciece their room if they fill out all the paperwork by May 1.

I graduated fairly recently from UT and now work at Microsoft. We definitely hire a lot out of UT and specifically out of the Turing program. Similarly, companies all across the West coast identify UT as a target school, spending greater than average resources on recruiting there.

Thank you very much! I will definitely make my decision as soon as possible. The UT honors programs and dorms sound like a great arrangement!
