some question about Turing Scholars Program

My major is computer science. Spring 2014 will be my first semester at UT Austin. I know it is late to ask about honors but still have some hopes.

Do you know the deadline of Turing Scholars application? I called admission office and honor office, but the answers were so different. Two people told me that it was December 1st; another said October 1st. The honor website said it is December 15th.

Could you give me some comments when you are in this program? Does it have better courses than those outside the program?

Thanks everybody and happy Thanksgiving!!!

You should reach out to Dr. Calvin Lin directly. He oversees the turing program, and teaches a few of the courses.

I’m sure you know this already, but turing is incredible competitive and there are only about 50 people per class! Transferring into turing is a challenge, and the classes are much more challenging than the normal CS classes! UT’s CS department is gaining ground and one of the rising programs in the nation, while turing is already top-notch and is comparable to MIT’s program.

Thanks Texaspride17. I love challenges. I believe competitiveness will help me achieve my goal quicker. I don’t afraid of taking most of the time to study.

I will try to call Dr. Calvin like you suggested on Monday. I hope I will have a good news. It is my fault for applying late.

fyi-- you can also take CS honors classes with Turing Scholars if you are in the Dean’s Scholar’s program and major in CS.

I asked professor Calvin. He said I can apply whenever I want. They will see how I do in UT CS courses before they make their decision. He also said honors courses offered only once a year and I should consider petitioning to take an honors course. How can I do the petition like he said?

I have applied for Dean’s Scholars program already. In their rules for transfer students, they said: “Students who have completed more than three semesters of college coursework are typically not eligible for transfer admission into an honors program.” I will get my associate degree after this fall. I think that I am out of chance of studying in Dean’s Scholars program.

I think you ask the prof teaching the honors course if he / she will admit you to the course.

yeah. I will ask advisers about this when I go there on Friday.
