Computer Science/Biology combined degree?

Hi i go to Northeastern University and I am thinking about doing a Computer Science/Biology combined degree? It involves a strong basis of computer science, programming and biology. I was wondering if this is a good choice? no matter what I am going to be doing a computer science degree. I am just trying to expand my horizons and biology has interested me. would this be an ok choice in getting a job in todays job market? would this combined degree limit me only to biology related jobs?

Thanks,

Hello, fellow Northeasterner!
If I were starting my degree right now, that’s probably the degree I would be doing. (I’m actually neuroscience.) But I would be coming at it from the natural sciences as my main starting point, with an interest in continuing on in research.

I think, though, that it might be tougher to get a few straight CS jobs with the dual degree if it cuts into the amount of CS you learn. However, it could also be a bonus. For example, you might be in a great position to work for a company like Epic, which does electronic medical records, so having a bio background might be seen as a plus.

Could you check around on some company websites to see what’s out there? Or, go talk to someone in the career center. After all, we do have the top-ranked career services in the country. :)

Why not just do CS while taking the biology courses of interest as electives?

“Biology-related jobs” at the BS level are practically nonexistent. You wouldn’t have much of an upper hand in regards to computer science jobs with a bio degree. However CS works with just about everything. If you intend a more business-oriented path, combine it with statistics/finance/etc. and it can make you a “wider” person. But mono-degree CS majors have it very well off. You can’t go wrong with CS in terms of job opportunities.
