Computer Science(BS) If I'm an ASU undergrad(Not Barrett) what are my chances @ Harvard grad school?

I’m an international student planning to study at the Arizona State University (Not Barrett). What are my chances to get into the Harvard grad school if I’m an undergrad from ASU?

A few examples of ASU undergrads who went on to Harvard would be appreciated too!

It all depends on you and what you do at ASU.

@TomSrOfBoston - Thanks for the quick reply. Since you could do that, could you tell me if it has happened before with any students? State university as an international undergrad to Ivy grad schools?

It happens all the time. As an international applicant you seem to be thinking that the name of the school is all important. If you graduate from ASU with a 3.8, get a high score on the GMAT, GRE or whatever, have internships etc. you will be on track for an Ivy grad school. If a student graduates from Princeton with a 3.0 and not much else to show, he won’t get into an Ivy grad school.

@TomSrOfBoston - Wouldn’t a student who did his undergrad in Computer Science (BS) with the same gpa as mine at a college that’s better than ASU FOR CS be highly preferred over me? I know this sounds a little silly to ask, but undergrad college choice is an important decision to make and you know that.

Not necessarily.

Graduate school admissions depends on your GPA, your GRE score, your letters of reference, and your particular research goals. If you want to work on a specific topic, and your professors can help you connect with the team that is working on those issues, that will be what matters. Better yet if your professor studied with that team, and can give you an excellent recommendation.

@happymomof1 - Thanks! Another question, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1804782-as-an-international-student-what-do-i-have-to-do-to-get-into-barrett-honors-college.html#latest

Among Harvard faculty, there is one with BS Maryland, PhD MIT, another with BA Queens / CUNY, PhD Princeton, another with BA Bryant, PhD Massachusetts, another with BS Georgia Tech, PhD Michigan, and one with MA Utah, PhD Massachusetts.

@happymomof1 - What worries me is the class sizes and the reviews on the student faculty ratios at ASU which get me thinking if I could even interact well with the CS professors to help me get into the Ivy grad schools.

@ucbalumnus - Are you trying to say that there aren’t real examples for students from ASU who went on to Ivy grad schools? 'Cuz Maryland, MIT, CUNY are much higher ranked than ASU.

@crseven - If you are smart enough to be able to get into the type of grad program that you want right now, then you will certainly be able to figure out ways to get to know your professors. You need to decide whether you are willing to stop second-guessing your choice of ASU, or whether you’d rather take a year off and apply to places you like better.

@happymomof1 Have already taken a year off, and wanting to study abroad and pay high fees stops me from looking at just one university. Do you have any experience in any international student getting into the Barrett Honors College once they’ve enrolled at ASU? Because I’m planning to do that. I know it happens for the in-state students.

Also, I’ve applied to U of Arizona, U of Iowa, U of Minnesota too. Yet to get a decision.

You need to ask the people at ASU about transferring into Barrett. The counselors in the International Students Office should know if anyone like you has done that.

When are you starting college? This fall? If so, you can’t be waiting around any more for U of AZ, U of IA, and U of MN! Classes start at each of those places within the next week or so!

If you are starting in January or next fall, once you do have any more acceptances you have plenty of time to worry about which is your best choice.

@happymomof1 - I’ve been accepted to ASU for Jan next year. I need to choose between: attending ASU from Jan and then try transferring to Barrett, attending U of IA as its ranked higher than ASU, and if by luck I get accepted to U of MN. If U of IA and MN don’t accept me, I need to prepare for my SATs coming up this October and try applying to Barrett for next fall as a first time freshmen. However, that seems a little impossible too, 'cos the application begins on September 9th, while the next available SAT is on October 3rd (ACTs even later than that); as far as other reviews and stats go, Barrett applications and seats fill up pretty quick!

Anybody else got any replies? Any help appreciated!

@happymomof1 - ?

You have aa real shot at Barrett if you stats as long as you apply by Dec 1st.
Whenn do you hear back from UMN and when do you need to give your answer to ASU?
An issue is that Arizona has a dual system : very goodd students get very good conditions and all others get lousy study conditions (your concerns as expressed are valid). It’s not as pronounced elsewhere. so I would wait until Ihear back.

@MYOS1634 - I didn’t clearly understand your reply. Would you mind replying again? Please? I’d really appreciate that!

Will do as soon as internet connection stops acting up :wink:
