Basically I'm wondering how heavy the work load would be for this match. The computer science major I'm looking at is a 128 unit degree, and I'm not sure how many units the minor is.

I'm proficient at performing my instrument so I won't have a problem getting into the minor, I'm just wondering how difficult it would be, or whether it would take an extra year to complete school with the music minor with computer science.

Also, It's not that I'm worried about the difficulty, I just want to know if the workload of computer science leaves room for a minor like this if I still plan on graduating in four years.

That really depends upon what program you take, which classes you take within that program, your overall aptitude for CS and programming more generally, and what sort of social life you may or may not want to have. I’m not sure anyone could really give you a generic answer to such a question.

Chances are, if you actually want a job when you graduate, you’ll probably have to do an internship anyways between 3rd and 4th year. Music is actually a pretty good combination with CS because those types of people tend to have very well developed creative abilities.

Just count the units for the CS major + units for the music minor + units for any breadth requirements not fulfilled by the major and minor - any overlapping course units or units for courses bypassed by AP or other credit going in. If it is substantially more than 128, then it may be difficult to squeeze all of that in.

Another thing to consider is how many of your CS courses have programming (time consuming) and how many of your music courses have performance (more time).

Why not just join a band? My physics professor is in a jazz band, when he’s not at the supercomputer center or doing his theoretical research or putting up with us undergrads.

I graduated with EE and Music degrees. The difficulty is juggling a thousand line SLOC lab while attending orchestra rehearsals + chamber music rehearsals + practice. If you love it, then do it!

I realize this thread is kind of old, but what schools did some of you attend where you could Major in Computer Science and minor in Music? I am a parent trying to help my son find exactly this combination.

A classmate of DD1 did Architecture and minor in music. Lethal :D. DD1 spent a decade in piano and thought of doing same. It’s more doable if you do music theory and such, rather than performance.

There are some schools that even have computer music type majors, so there’s synergy between the two. Might be worth looking into such.

Hi, I realize this is an old thread but I’m currently starting my freshman year and really want to stick to this combination. I’m already on track for Majoring in Computer Science (128 crd) but I also really want to minor in music composition (20 crd). However, my university has a excess credit surcharge that doubles my payments per every “excess credit”. Which is any credit that surpasses 110% of my Major credits. Is Majoring in Comp Science while minoring in Music Composition something doable within the 4 year span of my Bachelor’s?
