Does anyone know of any web sites/companies which have summer internships available for Computer Science majors? Thank you again for your help.

Where are you located?

Harvard students I know have gotten internships at places like Akamai, Google, and various other software firms in the Boston/Cambridge area.

Washington D.C.

Do you want to strictly work for a company or will research do?

Some employers will take care of housing for their summer interns (Mozilla in the Silicon Valley area provides housing and transportation). IBM has been looking for coop students in the greater Boston area but they want students for a semester + a summer.

A site that I use in looking for summer or other jobs is:

[Computer Science Internship Jobs in Washington, DC | Indeed.com](http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=“computer+science”+internship&l=washington+dc&start=30)

mathson worked for Nvidia last summer. They had internships available relatively late and did indeed provide flights and a housing stipend and they helped locate housing options. Many companies have already chosen internships - he’s got one offer already. Your son’s school ought to have listings.

Search dice.com using “intern” as your keyword.

Check if your college has connections with IBM. DS interviewed with an IBM rep at CMU a few months ago and she posted his resume internally and he got contacted by managers out of NC, Texas, MA and even overseas. There’s also an intership project called “extreme blue” which he may try for in the next cycle.

Check first with the recruiters on your campus assuming there are some.

The DC area is a great place for internships. Check on opportunities with the various government agencies as well as the big defense contractors in the area. If they don’t recruit on your campus then check on their websites for internship opportunities. If you’re thinking of interning someplace where a clearance is required then you need to get started real soon.

My son spent two great summers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in their Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, when he was an undergraduate computer science major. But this is only suitable for people with an interest in research.

Deadline is in mid-February.

Many major companies with a portfolio of software products hire interns. Your college’s placement office may have an inside track regarding who’s hiring and could help you on placement. I know from experience (having hired interns) that the large universities do that. So perhaps you’re from a smaller college that does not focus on placement for summer jobs. Even so, ask them.

If your placement office can’t help, create a list of the 50 (or so) companies that have software/computer products. You’ll find that many of the companies are in Silicon Valley, Greater Boston, Washington DC. There are of course others (albeit fewer) in the Seattle Area, Orlando, North Carolina Research Triangle, and Dallas. Check their web sites. You’ll find that they have a process for submitting resumes for new graduates. Follow that process as an intern.

Also contact your professors, and (if you have a suitable list) alumni at companies of interest.

It’ll take some time – a lot like applying for a job. But generally there are no smple short cuts.

I’m sure you’re cognizant of the large number of internships Microsoft has, especially for computer science majors.

Look at:https://careers.microsoft.com/careers/EN/US/CollegeInternships.aspx

Though you need to apply ASAP because they fill those slots up fast. If anyone has any ideas for internships for economics majors, we’d appreciate info on that too.

Many internships in Washington, DC are suitable for economics majors, but a large proportion of these internships are unpaid.

Thank you very much for all of your wonderful responses.
