Unweighted cumulative GPA: 3.4
Weighted cumulative GPA: should be around 3.5 cumulative, this term I had a 4.2

I know my GPA is terrible. One of the reasons is because I was homeschooled up until 9th grade and seriously struggled in my freshman year. Every subsequent year has been a major improvement and I finished this year's first term with all A's and A's despite being in two AP classes, one college credit class and one college prep class. Also, in my junior year, I botched a midterm exam and finished the class term with a C+. I had a C+ in my first term of Algebra II understanding the material but getting a bad grade because I didn't feel like studying. I regret that profusely. That dragged me down a lot.

I am taking AP Statistics (I have an A- because I actually studied really hard) and Precalculus next semester (I expect an A or A- because I plan on studying really hard and have even prepared beforehand) but I have not taken AP Calculus yet. I will have to do this in college.

I will explain my grade issues as best as possible in my essays.

ACT: 28
English: 31
Math: 26
Reading: 29
Science: 24
ACT Writing: Has not come in yet

Extracurriculars:

Strong interest in computer science and computer programming, have written numerous complex programs in C# such as those that cover concepts like finite state machines, pseudorandom number generators and game engines. I have used Kismet, Blender 3D game engine and LEGO Mindstorms NXT. In my junior year, I took and passed a college class offered by a local college.

Have contributed volunteer hours to my church library (10+ hours)
Have contributed volunteer work to my high school's musicals by being part of the tech crew for 3 years (50+ hours)
Strong interest in collecting and reading science fiction books (I probably own and have read hundreds)
Blue belt in Taekwondo
I've been involved with my high school's Social Studies academic team for four years
I've played the clarinet for over four years and participated in solos and ensembles as well as marching band for three years
Over the summer, I built a suit of medieval armor
Science Olympiad
I have some other minor extracurriculars

I am extremely motivated towards computer science and robotics and would be quite satisfied with my life if the only thing I did after college was build robots or make programs.

Do I have any chances with these schools? If CMU, UMICH or Georgia Tech are not a good fit, what would be?

If you don’t believe him why post? This is a chance me post and the guy gave his chances!

( This is all assuming you are full paying , with aid all 3 are extremely high reaches and near impossible D: )

CMU Comp sci is as selective as some ivy programs so I really feel it is much too high of a reach for you . I also believe both umich and gatech are mid-high reaches unless you are in state for one of them , making that college simply a reach. I think options like Purdue, u wash, wisconsin madison, are possible matches.

If you are willing to dazzle in your essays and you don’t have a limit to how many schools you can apply to, I believe you could go ahead with mich and gatech as the admissions process can be quite the crapshoot and they look for kids that stray away from the cookie cutter personna - try to make yourself unique as possible in the essays. With that said, I really don’t think you should bother with cmu comp sci - it is ridiculously hard even for kids with 2200+ SATs and perfect gpas. If you desperately want cmu, try applying for another course :)

Sorry, but your GPA and ACT scores are too low to be accepted at these schools. You had better plan on some more realistic schools. Have you taken your SAT subject tests yet?

I was just at CMU with my son. The school of CS is expecting over 7000 applications this year and will fill 140 spots. You do the math. It’s incredibly competitive. Your ACT isn’t even in the ballpark.

Your GPA and ACT are both too low for UMich even if you are from in state. The admission average uwGPA was 3.85 last year and the mid 50 ACT was 30-33. CMU and GATech are about the same.
You may

Where is your home state? You may try Purdue although it may also be a very high math to low reach.

Have you considered RIT? Your GPA may be a bit low for them but your ACT is higher than average. Their computer science program is well respected and they have a great co-op program. My sister goes there now. She was accepted into CMU but didn’t get money so she chose RIT instead. She is about to start her second paid internship with Microsoft. You should look into it, it is a good school.
