Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering

Initially accepted as computer science last November and then changed to computer engineering January. UT approved the change. Did I make a right move ?

@Dad2013, do you happen to have more than one child in the college application process for fall 2014? Or has someone gotten hold of your ID and is posting stuff that does not make sense?

I have 3 kids to take care. What I need to get a help is actually 3rd one who got CAPPED to UT.

@Dad2013, So you have one D that has perfect stats and is on a pre-med track, one that has been offered CAP through UT Austin and one that is trying to decide between Comp Sci and Computer Engineering and has seemingly been accepted to either one he/she decides? Is that all of them?

I’m going to suggest that you encourage your students set up IDs and ask the questions that they have. This question - regarding “did I make a right move - changing majors?” probably won’t get too many replies - especially coming from Dad.

OK @Dad2013, I’m glad you edited your post to tell me that you indeed do have three kids entering college. Yes, I agree with you. The other two appear to have much easier decisions to make. The CAP student is the one to focus on regarding decisions.

ok, i will make separate accounts for them.

That’s Okay @Dad2013. When I saw the various posts it did not make sense to me unless you were supporting multiple students in the college application process. Since you have explained that you are (and I guess you get to pay for them all too?) I can better understand where your questions are coming from. I will jump over to the CAP thread.

It is Spring Break for many schools in Texas this week, so I would not expect a lot of posters until next week. Especially as the weather is finally nice.

One of my kids had the same dilemma. At the time (3 years ago) it was much easier to transfer into computer science as a major than into engineering. So he decided to start in engineering and then transfer if he decided he didn’t like it. He is still in engineering and will graduate on time.

That is awesome @kp3457! Son or daughter? What area of engineering?

You do make a great point. If student is not drawn by a strong passion one way or the other, and can get accepted to a more selective / competitive major, start in that major.

My DH went to UT in engineering. Eventually changed to Business. His official major was “Engineering route to Business”. Not too many of those around.

Computer Engineering major. At the time it was explained to us as computer science taught by the engineering department.

What are differences between the Science and the Engineering in Computer ?

In a nutshell, Science primarily involves software while Engineering primarily involves hardware. Computer engineering is a specialty area of electrical engineering.

Computer Engineering students choose between two primary technical core focus areas: Computer
Architecture & Embedded Systems or Software Engineering.
