<p>So, one friend of mine currently in college said that at his college they have free access to things like antivirus software, microsoft office, etc. I'm wondering what kind of stuff Duke offers, but also whether Duke will have things like windows 7 (for mac if needed or something) and software that u'd normally have to buy or pay extra for on both the pc and the mac, etc. </p>
<p>Basically, like, what generally could u expect to get for "free" on your computer?</p>
<p>Everything that you mentioned can be downloaded for free from Duke OIT. I don’t know when you get your NetID, but once you can login to Duke’s system, you can see all available software here:</p>

<p>Duke offers the following software that I found useful (along with many others):</p>

<li>McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (Perpetual License) for both PC/Mac</li>
<li>Microsoft Office 2010 Pro Plus I think (Along with other recent versions)</li>
<li>Microsoft Windows 7 (Professional I think)</li>
<li>Mathematica</li>
<li>Maple</li>
</ul>
<p>Along with that, Duke also offers a decent selection of software from vendors like Adobe for a heavily discounted price. </p>
<p>Additionally, iPod-designated classes also allows those enrolled to buy an apple iPod for about $100 and comes with recording attachments. (Note: it’s been a few years since I bought mine, idk if this is still the case or what model they offer now. Back then it was the iPod Video 30GB). </p>
<p>Apparently now, the library also has a couple Kindles loaded with ebooks that can be checked out by the students. </p>
<p>And last (but not least, IMHO), you get access to the library’s collection of online journals for free which is great.</p>

<p>Please note that you need to be on the Duke network to activate Microsoft Windows 7 or Office 2010. This is due to Microsoft’s new volume licensing scheme which activates volume licenses by connecting to a server for verification. In this case, the server is on the Duke network. The software is designed to “phone home” once a week to make sure that you are still on the Duke campus and using the software as it was intended (aka, for Duke affiliates). In short, to activate and stay activated, you either have to be on the Duke campus regularly (at least once a week) or VPN onto the network once a week.</p>
