Which computer should I get for D? Where is best price?TIA

@momwantstoknow‌ - What is her presumed major?

English/liberal arts

Then it makes less difference if she gets a PC or Mac. Although it makes less difference these days anyway because Mac can run Windows, a lot of the business majors prefer PC’s because the programs are primarily written for them. I have observed that Macs seem to be preferred among the liberal arts types, although my D had a PC.

I am not sure how much prices vary these days, maybe some other members here that are currently or have recently been in the market can speak to that. It might be worth a call to Tulane’s tech service people and see if they get any decent discounts and/or if there are service advantages if you buy through them.

You can get a student discount through Apple (and I’m sure most PC suppliers as well) for computer, ipads etc. You can get a 13 inch MacBook Pro for $999 with the education discount!

Tulane Technology Connection prices:

Very competitive. And you can get them to register and set up the Wifi connection while you put sheets on the bed and hang posters.

Computer is personal so get your D to decide on Mac or PC. Then look at the specifications, memeory, hard drive, wifi capabilities, programs loaded, camera, etc - probably a good idea to go tot he store and actually look at the computer. My son like one computer on paper but when Mom dragged him to the store he actually got another because he didn’t like the keyboard and feel of his first choice. This will then narrow your search.

Once you find a computer your D likes then I would read reviews (cnet) and see what the users have to say about the computer. Then after all that, shop around the price, tigerdirect.com, amazon, tulane, bestbuy, etc - they should be about the same price (from my recent search and purchase anyway) and they do offet discount to students. Sign up for bestbuy college discounts, all you need is an email with .edu

It is a big investment so spending a little time is worth the headache you may avoid in the future. We also told our son this is a one and done deal - he looses it, stolen, not good enough, whatever he is responsible for the next computer. This way he put more effort into picking a computer and we hope he will take care of it!
