I need to get a new computer for the upcoming school year. I will be a first year student, and I am debating whether to get a computer through the Holy Cross Bookstore Computer Store. Does anybody know the advantages/disadvantages of doing so?

Do you know the price, it’s usually more through the school, sometimes a lot more. In reviews, many students didn’t get it though them, some did, no one seemed to have any problems. The only thing they mentioned on HC’s site, was they don’t reimage it at the end of your 4 years.
My D was going to email this week to ask the price, but the fact it wasn’t listed, gave me pause. :/

General rule of thumb is that if you are relatively computer savvy and can take care of mundane technical issues, don’t buy it through the college. But if you are the type that needs a fair amount of helpesk support then it is worth it since these from the college come with a support package. The higher price covers this support service.

1499.00 is much more than we were looking at paying…Wow, with twins, I am going to be bargain hunting!

I would avoid buying items from the bookstore as they always seem to be a rip off price-wise.

I agree the computers are way too expensive. I’m going to go bargain hunting as well. I actually talked to a friend of mine at HC who told me the computer is not worth it. The support people will fix your computer no matter what so the extra cost affiliated with the ITS department helping is unnecessary.

I’m also going to be a first year student; I’m not going to get one through the school. I believe they want you to purchase a dell laptop…which are…sub-par, to say the least. They NEED to be repaired all the time. I’m sticking with Toshiba. Four years of dropping this laptop down stairs, spilling water on/around it, powersurges, ect, and this thing is still running. Well worth the investment.
