hi y'all,
do students at williams bring their laptops to class to take notes on, etc.? or do they just use them in the dorms/library? i ask this because i want to know whether to go with a more powerful laptop or a more portable one. thank you!

most students don't use laptops for notes. I use mine primarily in the dorm/library. I opted for the heavier, more powerful laptop (dell inspiron 6000, about 7lbs) and I've been thrilled with it.

i'm trying to decide between the 12" and the 15" powerbooks. my high school's a laptop school so i'm used to EVERYONE having computers in class, but i'm not dependent on it...so i think i'll go with the 15" now. thanks!

I have the 12" powerbook (bought it two years ago, before my freshman year). I love the portability of it. I don't take notes on it, but I do tend to study and write papers in different places around campus, and I like having the tiny, light computer that I can jsut carry around like a notebook all day if I want to.

If you think you might be the kind of person who studies in the dorm more (or doesn't mind carrying a real computer bag when you need to take it places, since I don't know if the 15" fits in most schoolbag-type things, at least what I carry), the 15" might be right for you.

My advice would be to upgrade the 12" with more memory, RAM, etc instead of getting the 15" for about the same price.

argh, just when i thought i had it figured out, lol...
i currently have a dell latitude c400, which is about the same size as the 12" pb, i think. i've never really wanted it to be bigger (but then again, i do carry it around all day, every day, because i have to), but i also have a titanium powerbook that's nice to watch movies on because the screen is a lot bigger...sigh. add to the fact that the WWDC in june might bring processor updates to the pb line and you can see why i am confused about what to ask for for birthday/graduation present.

i am definitely someone who would work in the library as opposed to the dorms (like to keep my work seperate from the rest of my life), so maybe portability is a factor even if i won't be taking the comp. to classes?

see, my gut says 12", but then i can't help but feeling like i am 'sacrificing' some great CPU power or something. (much like kids who have trouble deciding between a bigger name school and one that fits them better--glad i didn't have that problem, lol!)

ugh.. i know the feeling... I cant decide on a laptop either... I've been shopping them and comparing everything... I'm excited to get it though, whatever it turns out to be!
