For discounts through Cornell, search the Cornell store at store.cornell.edu. These discounts generally suck though; check those popular "deal" sites like slickdeals.net or dealnews.com for better prices. I think somewhere Engineering publishes recommended minimum specifications (probably in something mailed to you) but generally any computer $500+ on those sites should be sufficient. There's always computer labs if you need more computing power.

if you're an engineering student i would try to get a core 2 duo processor with at least 2gb ram...if you can get one with windows xp on it i would...vista is a bit sketchy right now

oh and there really is no special deal through cornell...they figure cornell costs 45k so students will have money to spare on cheap overpriced hardware! D:

are you getting a desktop or a laptop? If it's a desktop, you should be able to build your own computer if you're an engineer... If you're getting a laptop, take a look at a 15 inch MacBook Pro. I don't know what your budget is so I can't be of much more help.

don't spend too much so that when a year goes by and they update your computer or it breaks you won't feel so bad buying a new one. I bought a new Sony Vaio for like almost a $1000 last August and by Jan 2007 it was only worth like $315, at most, to Sony.
