Anyone familiar with the Computing Scholars program at UTD? If you are in this program do you mind sharing your high school stats?
Hi @3scoutsmom, my DD is in the program. She had a 1500 SAT score with a 730 math, if I remember correctly. She also had 2 years of CS at her HS. She was asked to test for this program in the early Spring last year. She is taking one of its courses this semester - Discrete Math, and is finding it challenging. So far, she has found the work for both Computing Scholars as well as the reg CS program to be challenging but a lot of resources are available and the upperclassmen are good about helping. It seems to be a very collaborative environment, a good choice for my DD.
Thanks @GTAustin! Can I ask what her rank was? Because DS was homeschooled until high school he had to start as a first year in foreign language and was in a regular (not Pre-AP) English class and although he has a great GPA and SAT his rank is not where he’d like it to be. I had no idea that kids in his school had been planning their classes since 6th grade to manuarve for the highest class rank!
@3scoutsmom, oh yes! you are in one of the most competitive HS’s in this area. I believe my DD was 5th out of about 600. I do think a high SAT score especially in math can overcome rank. I know for UT Austin that was the key. They were looking for perfect 800 scores on math for Turing.
@GTAustin - can you confirm that there is no separate application required for this program?
There is no separate application. She just received an invitation to apply and test for the program from Dr. Ivor Page who runs it in the early spring. I do know on the website it says you can nominate your child for the program. We did not do that but I was thinking about it!
Thank you. Saturday we are attending Scholars day open house. This is our first visit to get a feel of the school before making decsion by May.
I hope you like it. It is not your traditional red brick campus. If you have any questions after Scholars day, just let me know and I’ll try to answer.
