Concentrations for Industrial Engineers

My School offers students doing a B.S. in Industrial Engineering the following two concentrations:

  1. Engineering Management
  2. Energy Systems

Which do you think would be more beneficial after I graduate and why? I am also pursuing minors in math and economics. My professional goals are a bit more toward the business side than the technical side, but I enjoy both. Thanks in advance.

It’s really hard to tell, without more knowledge around the curriculum for each concentration. I’m assuming you also have a “General Industrial Engineering” concentration or option? If that’s so, what’s the difference in courses between the three options? You’ll need to review those differences. Engineering management (or some flavor of management/economics) is a typical concentration or minor chosen by IE’s. Energy systems “concentrations” in IE are more rare.

Since your school offers a concentration in energy systems, you likely have one or more members of the IE faculty that specialize in this field. They likely even have a lab setup to support research in this field and may be working with one or more industry sponsors. Do some research and ask current students their opinion about this option, find out what employers have been recruiting for this field, who is teaching the classes, do they have a lab, and do you find the subject interesting?

Good Luck!
