Concerned about my chances of being accepted

Hey Guys!
UDel is my top choice but the more I read the more I feel alittle overwhelmed that I may not be good enough

3.5 GPA (possibly higher now though)
1800 SAT taking again in the fall after more study time
11 Honors classes and 2 AP classes

My concern is this, Due to major health issues (I became very sick freshmen year and spent two years bed bound home tutoring while I recovered from two major brain surgeries) I have not been able to volunteer as much as I would have liked and also haven't been able to be a part of any clubs or sports. I have spent the last year, my junior year, just trying to be able to handle whole days at school. I know UDel looks highly upon activities and how the student has contributed to their highschool.

Now, being in better health I seem to be playing "catch up". Do you thing my situation will hurt my chances of being accepted?

I forgot to mention that before being sick I was active on my schools track team and in student gov.

I also figure skated for 10 years and have recently gotten back into it.

in state or out?

I think you have a very good shot, even without significant hours of volunteering. My son had similar stats (slighty higher SAT, but slightly lower GPA), average extra-curriculars, OOS, and he was accepted (for fall '09). They had an area on the application to explain any circumstances that may have taken away from your high school performance. You can probably mention your situation there. I won’t worry.

Do you have a particular major in mind? Some of the majors at Delaware are much more competitve than others (i.e. chemical engineering and nursing are extremely competitive as well as a number of others).

If you have an excellent first semester this fall, write a good essay, and apply on time, I think you’ll be in great shape. You might find that your SAT scores come up a bit, also. Just prepare a good application in a timely fashion and you will be fine. Make sure your GC mentions your health issue in that recommendation.

I’m OOS, from Rhode Island.
I was orig. thinking Biology but after going to a discovery day this weekend I am more attracted to their bio tech. pre medical program. I dediccate atleast an hour a day to SAT study time and my highest practice score was recently a 2200.
Thank you for all of your help!

Sounds like you’d do great if you keep up what you’re doing  are you planning to skate here?

I’d add that if you you have documentation of the health issues, I’d think they’d likely take that into consideration, boosting your chances.

This is the only school that i’ll be applying to that has such a great skating team, and synchro, so it really is a factor in my college choice. I’ve skated in nationals twice and placed in the top ten both times, as well as eastern championships every year since the age of 13.

We also recently had the chance to talk to the head of admissions before an information session he was giving and he sugested the same thing as you, PTmajor5, to make sure that I include documentation of my health issues in with my application. So I will be doing that as well.

Thank you for all of your help!
