I'm an accounting major at the University of Texas at Dallas. Unfortunately, my freshman year I had organization problems and generally took things too lightly. As a result I received quite a few sub-par marks in the courses. Although only one of the bad marks was in a business class, I still obviously took a sizable hit to my GPA. However, after recognizing and confronting my weak points, I've been able to pick things up considerably. My sophomore year I got a GPA of 3.8 in my first semester and 4.0 in my second and I am confident that I can continue that success. However, I'm extremely worried that I've already dug myself a hole too deep to recover from. My GPA is now a 2.83 and I'm very confident it will go up in my remaining years but I'm still worried sick that it won't be enough. I'm hoping to be able to get into a respectable grad school and earn my CPA. In addition, my academic struggles in as well as a few mix ups with the school have left me thinking I may have to take an extra semester to complete my undergraduate studies. I can't help but feel kind of stupid when I think about this. I feel inferior to my peers. Do you think it's too late for me to salvage my goal? Thanks very much for any replies.

Never too late…try for your original goals, albeit you may have to redefine them along the way…look ahead.

if you finish your last two years with a 4,0 you can graduate with a 3,4, which is def. not too bad for respectable grad schools.
just write in your admission essays about how you managed to overcome your struggles and how it helped you to become a more ambitious person. if they look at the stunning upward trend in your transcript, they will truly be impressed.

are you allowed to retake the classes you did terribly in and replace the GPA ? That could be an alternative, ask your advisors.

Tvotr,

Your situation was a little bit like mine. I was taking college classes when I was a senior in high school and I did not take it seriously so I came away with 4 C’s and a B. What I am doing now is retaking these classes at the same CC. I had a 2.73 and I just retook 2 classes this Summer Quater and bumped my GPA up to a 3.1. I am retaking two more this quarter before I get to OSU and I will have around a 3.3.

It will cost more moneyin the long run. My situation is better than your because I made my mistakes before I was actually in college. But I was going to graduate a quarter or two before my classmates anyway (despite all my retakes I am done with 75 hours and I just finished my first calendar year).

You can’t worry about these things now. You probably won’t be getting a CPA or go to grad school for a couple years after your finish your undergrad. Do the best you can do now.
