Concerned Prefrosh

Hello, I have an idea about what i would like to study (something in the humanities and music.) However, I am not sure what to study in the humanities area. My interests lie in Philosophy and English. I know that the English Department at wesleyan is one its strongest (i haven't heard much of the philosophy department)...I also know that there is a COL major available (i am not sure if that is for me). Anyway, I'm torn between Philosophy and English (possible COL as well)...some people believe that an English major may be more practical than philosophy in terms of seeking a job after graduation. I just want to know what are your thoughts. Just to reiterate, I plan to double major in the humanities and music. Please respond thoughtfully...

Actually, the philosophy department at Wesleyan is arguably the strongest out of the LAC's, and it is also one of Wesleyan's strongest academic departments, even more so than the English Department. I strongly recommend you research this more on your own because it is definitely worth it, and believe me, there is certainly nothing to be negatively concerned about when dealing with philosophy at Wes.

As colberTreporT says, Philosphy and English are both strong at Wes (and COL is awesome, if you end up going in that direction), so either way you chose, you'll be served well. Music here is also very strong, and double majoring is not very hard, since there isn't a huge core or anything taking up a lot of classes.

As for between Philosphy and English, I don't think you need to decide that until you come to college and take a class or two in each. You'll probably end up finding you like one more than the other...and either is ok for getting jobs later, really.

I know Wesleyan has a great theater department, especially with the student-run production group, but does anyone know anything about the actual classes within the major? Are they good?

have you looked at the course offerings at wesleyan?

Are there any philosophy majors who would like to share their insight? (Same for COL and English majors out there...)

in addition some people have suggested that I at least take "practical" courses like economics and goverment to supplement philosophy...the problem is that my second major will more likely be music

COL is a great program -- I'm starting it next year as a sophomore. What's great about it is that it combines European philosophy, literature, and history into one major. Each colloquium incorporates each of these fields of study, with a lot of input from the majors about what goes into the syllabus. On the other hand, there is the language requirement; study abroad is required in the second semester of sophomore year. The level depends on your language, but with some languages, you would be able to start at Wesleyan and be able to meet the requirements by the team you must leave. If you have any other questions about COL, please ask!
