Concerned with my score

Hello CC,

I'm a new member, using a faulty keyboard, so please excuse any small grammatical mistakes.

I'm currently in my Junior year of high school, in a distance school/home school program. I have not gotten any math courses due to the school not providing them since 7th grade till now. I am currently on Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 simultaneously.

I have the SAT coming up this March 8, and with little to no practice prior on any form of math, writing, or critical reading. Needless to say I am scared %$*#less. Using the SAT practice tests, I've gotten a 560 on Math, 520 on Writing (with an 8 on my essay), and 570 on the Critical reading.

This is a terrible score in my opinion, and at the minimum, I'd want to raise my math to a little under 700 at least, while my writing and critical reading to around 650 minimum.

Is this possible? I'm having issues with my essay, math questions involving higher equations with functions, XY coordinates, and out of a 201 list of vocabulary I'm practicing, I know around 110-120, while having difficulty trying to remember more.

What would be the best step for me? Full on focus on finishing Algebra 1's last 4 chapters within a week, then review Geometry? Focus on giving multiple practice tests, mark false questions and google them?

Sorry to bother you with a rant and difficult to answer question.

Of course it’s possible. Get barron’s or any SAT math book. Yes take practice tests and correct your mistakes. If vocab is hard to memorize then just group words with similar meanings. Good luck!

Oh boy, you are in a very difficult situation, especially as a junior who will presumably be applying to colleges next year. I would suggest that you don’t “graduate” next year and get another year of high school. That doesn’t address your SAT/ACT needs right now however.

Make sure you go through a couple of prep books and read the suggestions, review your answers and keep practicing.

The first time I took the SAT I made a CR610 M550 & W570. After taking a practice test every other weekend for about four months and really becoming familiar with the test I made 650’s in every section. So, yeah, your goals are definitely attainable; just take advantage of the summer and STUDY, then come October retake the test, and you should have your scores back before early decision deadlines. (And I stayed up all night before the test doing idiotic teenage stuff, so I have a feeling I can still do better.)
