Some more info…
Well, there is a MCAT-like test to get into pharmacy school. I think it’s similar in content. I forget it’s name (PCAT?).

A chemistry and/or biology major would be good preparation for pharmacy, if you don’t go outright into a pharmacy program. If you are interested in chemistry as well as biology, pharmacy might be a better fit than dentistry.

I think pharmD programs are 4 years now. I suggest talking to recent as well as older graduates because the requirements to start practicing pharmacy have increased in recent years. Because I’m not a pharmacist myself, I can’t be more specific.

I always thought the high suicide rate for dentists was mostly because they had the means (access to drugs) and the knowledge (for administering a fatal dose).

It would be humiliating for a dentist to fail at suicide, his professional medical competence would be in doubt.

Just an aside–the dental practice I go to actually opened a new office decorated as a camping lodge. All rooms are soothing colors, and have a window with trees outside. It does help people like me who HATE going to the dentist.

Seriously? I love being a dentist! I like the clinical and business aspects and I’ve been practicing over 25 years. What other career offers this kind of income on a 4 day work week? You need to be kind and empathetic, have good clinical skills, be able to manage staff, and run a business. Dental school is expensive and loans can be a nightmare, but if you live below your means and don’t think DDS means entitlement, you can be very successful in the long run. Dentistry gives me the freedom to earn a very good living on 28 hours a week, allows me to take time off whenever I want and afford nice vacations. I like treating patients, making a difference in their lives, and generally look forward to work. I’d recommend it a a great career choice!
