My D is a first year freshman nursing student at the University of Pittsburgh. After 8 weeks, she's decided that nursing is not for her. She's always wanted to be a doctor, but as a woman, doesn't feel it is worth the sacrifice to her future family. Now she's thinking dentistry. She has spent some time with a dentist who is a friend of ours and really enjoyed it.

Anybody out there with kids in dental school? Any tips, advice, etc.?

My daughter will be going to a dental school in the fall this year. There is a wealth of information for predental students at the following site:

One thing I am curious about is why dental schools are not as popular as medical schools. A dental career seems to be more attractive in many respects.

My DIL is a dentist. It is good because she can work part time if she likes and the pay is decent. But those student loans are preventing her from starting a family right away.

I suggested to our D to investigate dental school vs medical. Her response was “gross” but being a surgeon doesn’t seem to bother her :). She didn’t like the idea of having her hands in someone’s mouth all day.

I agree though, a dentist has much more flexibility, very few middle of the night phone calls, etc. It is a much more family friendly career.

My brother is a dentist and his daughter is a first year dental student. He went undergrad on an ROTC scholarship and decided on dentistry rather than medical school because he’d already committed 4 years to the Army on graduation. His daughter also originally planned on med school but decided that the flexibility of dentistry would work out better for her if she wanted to have a family and work part time. She found that it was extremely competitive getting into dental schools - there really aren’t that many out there. She graduated from University of Notre Dame with a 3.8 and amazing EC’s (student manager for football and basketball teams - basically a full time job her senior year) and didn’t get into all the schools she applied to. She followed in her father’s footsteps (also ND undergrad) to the University of Buffalo. So far she’s very happy with her decision.
