Hi,
Has anyone used the Concordia Summer Language Immersion program for high school credit to actually used for High School credit? Will colleges consider it as a one year foreign language ?
Hi,
Has anyone used the Concordia Summer Language Immersion program for high school credit to actually used for High School credit? Will colleges consider it as a one year foreign language ?
My D1 took 2 years of a language for HS credit. Her HS (private) did not accept the credits (typical for them), but my D sent the transcripts to colleges. I assume they would have been treated as fulfilling HS foreign language credits if she needed them to. But she also had 4 years of another language in HS.
It really won’t matter if she is able to skip a level or two at her HS. For almost all colleges, the level completed is the same as # of years. So if a students finishes level 4 after sophomore year, pretty much any college that requests/requires 4 years of a foreign language will accept that as fulfilling the recommendation.
@intparent is correct; most private HS’s will not accept summer school credit from any program other than their own.
@skieurope - thanks… There was already a previous discussion that the only “evidence” we saw on level = number of years was from UCs which many of us knew are expensive for OOS students…I do not plan to re-open that discussion.
I am checking with our HS to see how will it show up on the transcript (I don’t think they normally accept transfer credits), but if it shows up, I doubt it will show up as equivalent of one year…Hence I am interested in knowing how other parents using the course in terms of college application, say did you write to college that it is equivalent to one year of HS?
@intparent how did you send the transcript to colleges? from Concordia? your private HS? or you sent it directly? Does the Concordia transcript specify that it is equivalent to one year program (I doubt)? In our case, I am hoping to use it to fulfill the third year of foreign language requirement.
I just had school, JHU, Center for talented Youth online high school send transcripts to each college.
Sorry, I don’t remember exactly what the transcript said. Kid is 26 and out of college now, and I got rid of it when purging paperwork last year. Her HS was willing to take official transcripts from programs like Concordia Language villages and send them along to colleges with the HS transcript, even though they wouldn’t officially put the credits on their HS transcript or accept them as HS credit. So that is what we did for both kids (one for HS credits, one for some college credits through a summer program). It was convenient.
Concordia is essentially a regionally accredited private high school, and produces the same sort of transcript my kid would have if she took a summer credit class at the neighboring school district. My kid is attempting to get into the new study abroad credit session for French, and we’ll ask the school for placement into the next class, rather than transcript credit.
@allyphoe Can you tell me about this study abroad program in French? Is it through Concordia?
@citymama9 Yes, through CLV. The tentative session number is FA44; I think the ETA for the brochure / official info is next week or the week after. Two weeks at Hackensack, a week of homestay in Belgium and a week of homestay in France. Runs the full month of July. Preference given to kids who will have completed French II prior to departure. Expensive, but comparable in price to the normal HS credit session plus airfare.
A “let us know if you’re interested” email went out to kids attending this past summer’s session in August, and they’ve been great about answering questions, which is how I know what I do.
@allyphoe Thanks so much
Does anyone know the difference between the two different sites for Concordia? The schedule on Cass Lake works better for us, but it seems that the main site may be better?
I am also looking for opinions on study abroad vs on-site in MN…anyone ?
thanks
Huh, I hadn’t heard that Concordia was going to start doing study abroad programs too. Interesting. I’ll be curious to see the materials when they’re available. It’s an awfully crowded market they’re trying to get into, I wonder how well their name recognition for programs in Minnesota will translate (pardon the pun) to the study abroad market.

CLV French study abroad brochure: https://issuu.com/concordialanguagevillages/docs/2269_clv16_creditabroadbrochure?
ETA: That’s an entirely useless piece of marketing material. Alas.
I have written to them to ask for more info.
Hi ! Not sure what language you want to learn, but a couple of years ago my parents sent me to French Camp in Quebec City for 4 weeks through Eduinter, I know they also do high school immersions programs. Not sure about college credits but maybe it’s somewhere on their website : http://learningfrenchinquebec.com
I had good experience there and the city is incredible!!
