Confirm or deny: doing away with generous in-state tuition benefits?

A mom whose D will be attending UA in the fall told me that next year (HS class of '12) is the last year that UA will give generous in-state tuition benefits to OOS students. (Instate tutition for a 25 on the ACT.) It makes sense, because I think the tuition break has done its job of raising the profile of the schools in states like Texas. But of course, that probably rules UA out as an option for my D (HS class of '14).

Can anyone confirm or deny that rumor?

Missypie,

I know they are starting to tier the in-state tuition benefit/scholarship/NRTA a bit as the student body has grown and the OOS population has risen, but I haven’t heard about them doing away with it entirely. What she may be talking about is this new tiered structure, which I suppose could be considered “doing away” with the existing out-of-state tuition reduction as it currently exists, but it’s not disappearing entirely. It appears that the Fall of 2012 will be the last full year of the current NRTA and the new one will pick up for Fall of 2013. Hopefully one of the current staff will be around at some point to answer that overall question about the future of the NRTA with some authority, but here is how they are going to structure it for the next couple years:

So, from what I can see, the short answer is they’re just replacing it with a bit more competitive (and slightly less generous) award structure in response to the significant increase in the student body and OOS interest.

Thanks so much! Like I said, it makes sense, because the old method seems to have done its job. But nice to know that UA is still pretty generous!
