So I found out that I probably won't receive in-state tuition for UA (Arizona) because I've been in the state for only 6 months. I will fill out an appeal form and later send it to the college to see if they can make some type of exception. Do you think they'll be able to offer me in-state tuition because I don't want to end up in too much debt for a public school. If it matters, I'm a first-gen college student coming from a very low-income household (10k/yr).

Also, I'm posing this here because the UA forum is very inactive.

Are you talking about NOW or instate for fall of 2015.

When did you move to,AZ. Usually you have to reside IN the state for 12 months prior to when you actually enroll. Call the school to ask what the date is when you would have needed to be in state to gain instate status.

If you moved to AZ in June 2014, you would be a resident for 12 months in June 2015. School starts in August.

Do NOT start college until you have that instate status. You may get it for next fall, but if you have to wait another year do so. Just work in the mean time.

You won’t be able to pay the OOS costs, so don’t even try.

I’m not sure what the problem is. Arizona requires 12 months domicile in the state at least one year immediately prior to the last day of regular registration for the semester in which the student proposes to attend the university.

You say that you’ve lived in Arizona since June 2014. You will be starting school the fall semester of 2015. That’s more than 12 months.

I’m guessing if there’s a problem it has to do with the date of “the last day of regular registration for the semester in which the student proposes to attend the university.”

And your mom moved there also in June 2014?

I’m with Middkidd. I don’t see the issue. By the time classes start, you will, have resided in the state for 14 months. That exceeds the 12 month residency requirement.

Does your mom work in AZ? Do you have a lease on an apartment? Utility bills to verify that you are indeed residing in AZ? An AZ drivers license (mom too)?

@thumper1, yes, we all moved in on the same day.

My mother does not work, but we do have an apartment. UA knows we live in Arizona, so that’s not the problem.

From the person I emailed at UA: “Since you have not been in Arizona for the required one year, the system is designed to deny you in-state status at this time. You can download a “XXXXX”, complete the form in
detail and submit it to the fax number in the front of the form and we take a look at it and
determine if we can classify you as a resident at this time.”
