Im a freshman at an out-of-state University and originally I studied Computer Science but there was some at home conflicts that was really screwing with my head and making it hard to focus causing me fall behind and eventually I switched out of the class.
I was thinking and researching about transferring for more than a couple months now and since it’s currently winter break I had the chance to sit down with my parents and talk about what I want to do.
I really want to continue studying Computer Science and I found a program at a technical school that will allow me to graduate with an associates degree and gain automatic acceptance and allow me to transfer with a scholarship to the instate University which is cheaper, closer to home and a better university than my current one. I’ve checked with counselers for my current credits and they say most will transfer but they also said its not certain.
I’m still working out the details but here is my issue:
If worse case scenario where none of my credits transfer would my entire first year be a big waste of money?
If I plan on transferring next year my motivation will be low and why would I want to try and excel in my classes?
Should I just switch majors back to CS here at my current school even though it’s way more expensive and further away than the university in state?
Or should I even try and see if I can transfer next semester, however highly unlikely.
Will your first-semester credits not transfer because the grades are too low? Find out by asking the tech college for a transfer transcript evaluation.
If the grades are too low, ask if the tech college accepts CLEP credits. Also check if the articulation university also accepts CLEP. If the schools accept CLEP, then take CLEP tests in the subjects for which your grades were too low, if you think you can earn the needed score to be granted credits at the new schools. This way, you recoup your lost credits.
Sounds like transfer for spring semester is the best new plan. Hope home issues have resolved. Have they?
if your current school is an out of state public and really expensive, then going back home can make financial senses. But I would just return home to attend a community college, focus on CS, and then transfer to the instate four-year.
My grades are fine, I just dropped my CS course and switched majors so that grade doesn’t appear on my transcript. What I’m worried about(and still waiting for a response from the counser at the tech/comm school) is that the CS program requires 28 credits in order to transfer to the university. And all those credits look to be CS related courses, I’m just hoping that they will allow me to take those courses all in one year. But I suppose that will only matter if my credits transfer from this year.
And yes my home issues have resolved. I just think it’s too late for spring semester because classes start at the same time. And I would have to move everything out of my dorm room plus pay a late fee charge of moving out… I get good financial aid but I don’t want to waste a ton of money of i don’t have too
Since you are locked in to the out of state school for the Spring why don’t you go back to taking CS courses and plan to transfer to your in-state option in the Fall? I am pretty sure that they will take transfer credit from your current school.
That’s a good point xraymancs. However most CS classes in the spring are a continuation of a class in the fall. I guess my main contradiction is the mindset of wasting a year. I guess I’ll find out when I talk to a counselor to get all my questions answered which should be in a couple days after the holidays.
