For the past month I have been attempting to narrow my list of prospective colleges to little sucess. I am curious to see what sugestions I may recieve.

My unweighted average is around 98%. I have taken the most difficult curriculum at the small private school I attend. I am second or third in my class out of thirty eight students. My (old) SAT score was a 1450, my SAT 2s were 690 bio, and 760 US history. My APUSH and APbio scores should be arriving soon. I participate in several clubs and do community service. I have recieved academic awards throughout high school.

I plan to go to college on the east coast preferably up north. I want to go to a school that isn't extremely large or small. I am currently unsure of what I want to major in.

I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Bookworm, Anyone can open a guidebook and give you a list of colleges in the northeast. But, without knowing more about you, it's impossible for anyone to really make suggestions. You have great stats and should do well in admissions, BUT you need to tell us more about yourself if you want us to help you.

For example, how would you describe yourself? How would you describe your circle of friends? Do you want to be surrounded with similar types in college, be around different types, or have a mix? Why? Are there certain types of people you don't like to be around? Explain? What do you do for fun? What classes have you enjoyed most in high school? Why? What would your ideal "college weekend" be like? Why?

Introduce yourself to us in a bit more and we can make some targeted suggestions ---

I have found that this entire college admissions process can be a journey of self discovery--which is the problem. I go to a small school and my group of friends generally consists of the ambitious/studious types. For fun we typically hang out because of the lack of activities in the town I live in. I think going to such a small, southern, private school has driven me to avoid the same type of environment in college choices. I have no definite direction when attempting to decide a major or career although I have ruled out anything involving mathematics. Right now I am slightly leaning towards journalism, political science, law and english. I want a college that is strong in a number of areas in case I change my mind.

I own a huge college book that provides school profiles and am unable to narrow my list. I have visited Vanderbilt and Emory and for the most part like those schools yet dislike thier locations. I also toured Furman which I found was not academically oriented, small(with few resources) and in a terrible location. My first priority is to find a school that is academically impressive and then consider the other qualities. My idea of great college weekends would probably be taking a road trip to a place within proximity to the college. I am not motivated to attend a school by the party scene and am a bit wary of schools with overwhelming percentages of students in fraternities/sororities.

My college counselor agreed that I would fit in up north and proceeded to list the following possibilities:
UVA, Vanderbilt,Emory,Davidson, and William and Mary

She also sugested Villanova,Georgetown, UPenn and as my super reach school Princeton.

Thanks
