Confused about Financial Aid...help?

What is: Student Self Help Expectation?

Is the Cal Grant for 4 years? It says

…so is that for each year? Or just the first year?

I'm not sure about the second part, but for the first part, my understanding is that you need to earn that yourself or borrow.

If your parents are paying for everything, then, essentially, your parents need to pay that as well. If not, then you get the money from a job or loan. I think on the FAFSA, it tells you how much you could earn in a year working, and that is the amount you can contribute.

My friend got $7,000 in Cal Grant...how is that possible? I thought it was $1551 for everyone?

I got 6500...maybe it has to do with the EFC? I'm really not sure at all...

Correctomundo, Cal Grant is merit-based in terms of qualifications only. Once you're qualified for the award, however, the amount awarded to any particular student is determined via their EFC. Thus, it turns into a need-based award. nate

My EFC is $60.00 & I only got $1551. Shouldn't I have received more?

Also, did you apply for Cal Grant A or B? I got Cal Grant B.

Well it depends, what does the rest of your financial aid award package look like?

What was the estimated loan amount? How much did you get in other grants/scholarships?

Federal Direct Loan Sub-NH 3,500
Federal Perkins Loan-NH 1,000

Student Self Help Expectation 3,100

Does EVERYONE get the Entering UG Scholarship?

I don't know... if you look at the paper that they send you for CalGrant, I think it says something about the difference between A and B... I'm not sure though... I though B was to give more money for a lower bracket of income. I don't understand why you only got that much... I think our family's EFC is 5000ish...

I have my financial aid package on one of my threads, if you want to look at mine.

How do they determine how much you get for the "Entering UG Scholarship"? If I switch to Cal Grant A & get the $6,141, will my Entering UG Scholarship be lower than it is now (which is about $8,000)? Right now I have $1,551 (Cal Grant B), and $8,000 for the Entering UG Scholarship, but would I be able to get about $15,000 ($8,000+ $6,141) if I chose to switch to Cal Grant A? I don't understand how you get the amount for the Entering UG Scholarship...

Anyone? Is it based on financial need, academic merit, etc.???

There are two type of cal grants: A and B. One of them, gives 1.5k the first year and 4.5k the next 3 years while the other one gives the most the first year and less and less the following 3 years. Not too sure about the specifics of each grant but you can easily look them up on the internet on your own.

The UG Scholarship is a grant given to students in addition to loans, federal and state grants, work study, as well as any outside scholarships to meet a student's financial need based on a student's EFC from the FAFSA.

BabyBlue: They will take out any loans that you have been given, then if you still have money over the 23k expense they will lower the UG grant money. I suggest you stick with the plan the commission gave you.
